Piracy fires in Oregon have expanded to more than 409,000 acres, and officials pointed out that “severe fire weather” was the fuel for its spread.
According to data released by the InciWeb National Wildfire Information Center, the fire has burned at least 409,611 acres and 53% of the fire is under control.
In Sunday’s update, incident commander Joe Hessel of the Oregon Forest Service Incident Management Team, which was responding to the fire, said, “Severe fire weather conditions and extremely dry fuel continue to challenge us in responding to this fire.”
Hessel added: “The progress we have made is due to the continuous and vigilant work of our staff.”
Since the first official report on July 6, the fire of piracy has been spreading. It is burning in the Fremont-Vinemar National Forest in Oregon, which is located about 28 miles northeast of Klamath Falls.
Last week, Bootleg Fire became the third largest wildfire in Oregon history, after burning 395,747 acres of Buzzard Complex Fire in 2014. Two wildfires larger than Bootleg Fire are 2002 Biscuit Fire and 2012 Long Draw Fire, both of which burned more than 500,000 acres of land.
In an update on Sunday, officials said: “The line of control on the east side of the fire site continues to be improved by removing smoldering fuel from the edge of the fire site. Staff use visual signs during the day to find these smoke areas. During night operations, firefighters Crews use infrared flying maps to track potential heat sources.”
The update continues: “As the smoke dissipates today, the fire behavior in the afternoon is expected to increase. Today will be the warmest and driest day in the next few days. The wind throughout the day is expected to become more and more northwesterly, but Still very light.”
In a tweet on Monday morning, the Bootleg Fire Information account shared a photo of an active fire at night and wrote: “When the full moon is over, overhead workers are on duty at Bootleg Fire. There are many fires burning in the west, and resources are Limited. Firefighters continue to’burn at night and keep what we got during the day.'”
