A video shared online shows an impressive portrait of the inventor Nicholas Tesla, But after various incidents leading to death were reported, the technology used to perform this operation was criticized for its danger. This may be self-explanatory, but don’t try it at home.
Artist Zack Smithey released his Tesla created using a technique called fractal wood burning Tik Tok Initially, but later shared with Reddit On Thursday, it received more than 14,000 votes.
“This is awesome,” one user wrote.
Smithey used this technique to produce lightning-like burns on the wood, forming patterns on Tesla’s face. Tesla (1856-1943) is a world-renowned engineer and physicist of Serbian American origin. He invented the first AC motor, electronic oscillator, and high-voltage transformer called the Tesla coil.
Appropriately, he once created 41 meters (135 feet) of artificial lightning in his Colorado laboratory.
“They’d better use AC [alternating current] Do this,” one user wrote. Smith confirmed in a comment that he did not actually use AC because the technology does not apply to it.
“If the person uses DC [direct current] In order to make a portrait, Tesla would turn over in the grave,” another user joked.
Although the rigor and creativity of this portrait created by Smithy has been well received on the Internet, the fractal burning has also attracted attention in the comments. Due to its incredibly high risk factors, the wood turning industry seriously does not support this approach.
Fractal wood burning involves applying a conductive solution on the wood, and then using two probes to apply high voltage. Then, the electric current burns through the wood and meets each other, producing lightning-like marks.
It may look cool, but it is actually a life-threatening danger, and even the most experienced carpenter is reported to have died. American Woodworking Association Even this practice is completely banned.
“I was shocked twice (just a bit annoying), but this is not a full-power shock,” Smithy confirmed in the comments.
The generators used in practice contain live-accessible wiring components that are not safe to use-whether they are homemade, such as a Smithy screwdriver with jumper cables, or purchased. According to reports, even pre-purchased products are often affixed with fraudulent security labels.
As of July 2021, the American Wood Turner Association has reported 30 deaths due to the use of fractal burners, but it is estimated that this number is actually much higher.
Security issues are highlighted as Reddit, Users even recounted their own tragic experience. “I should mention that when I was in high school, a girl died in my area. She died on the spot. A local woodwork shop owner kept one of her works and told people not to mess with it.”
“I know someone died this year. He turned it off and removed the pins, not knowing that there was still charge in the capacitor,” another wrote.
Weekly newspaper Smithy has been contacted for comment.
