According to the Associated Press, the Dixie Fire is the largest wildfire in California’s history. It threatens more than 14,000 buildings in the mountains and rural communities in the northern Sierra Nevada Mountains as it continues to burn down the state.
Since the fire broke out nearly a month ago, the fire has destroyed nearly 900 houses. Last week, the small community of Greenville was mostly consumed by fire.
Fire spokesperson Edwin Zuniga said that reports on the damage caused by the Dixie fire “will definitely change” because assessors cannot access some charred areas to assess the extent of the damage.
Some clear skies over the fire this week made it possible for the aircraft to join nearly 6,000 firefighters to fight the fire.
“Whether we can fly depends largely on the location of the smoke. There are still areas where the smoke is too much,” Zuniga said.

Workers have cut thousands of acres of new lines of fire to prevent the fire from spreading. Authorities said that officials believed that a line of fire formed on the south side of the fire would prevent the fire from spreading, but the future of the fire is unclear.
“We don’t know where this fire will end or where it will land. It continues to challenge us,” said Chris Carlton, director of Plumas National Forest.
Fire meteorologist Rich Thompson warned late Monday that temperatures are expected to rise in the next few days and humidity is expected to fall. There may be triple-digit high temperatures later this week and strong winds will return in the afternoon.
According to data from the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, the area of the fire that broke out on July 14 has expanded to 762 square miles (1,973 square kilometers), which is only 25% under control.
The area of Dixie Fire is about half the August Complex. This is a series of fires across seven counties triggered by lightning in 2020. These fires fought together. State officials believe this is the largest wildfire in California.
Governor Gavin Newson On Tuesday, a state of emergency was declared in northern Shasta, Trinity and Tehama counties. The declaration freed up national resources to help fight fires in these counties and provide assistance to residents affected by the fires.
The wildfires raging in California are one of about 100 fires across 15 states, most of which are in the west, where historic drought conditions have dried up the land and can catch fire.
The Dixie Fire is the largest single fire in California’s history and the largest fire in the United States. Incident Commander Rocky Oplinger said that nearly a quarter of all firefighters assigned to the Western Fire are fighting the California fire.
Heat waves and historic droughts related to climate change have made wildfires in the western United States more difficult to extinguish. Scientists say that climate change has made the area warmer and drier in the past 30 years, and will continue to make the weather more extreme and wildfires more frequent and destructive. As the fires in the West broke out, parts of Europe were also fighting fires caused by dry fire conditions.
In the northwestern part of the Dixie Fire in the Shasta-Trinity National Forest, hundreds of houses are still threatened by two continuing fires. Approximately one-third of McFarlane fires are under control. A new evacuation order was issued to residents near the monument fire on Monday, which controlled only about 3%.
South of the Dixie fire, firefighters prevented the further development of the river fire, which broke out near the Colfax community last Wednesday, destroying 68 houses. It is controlled by nearly 80%.
