After the city of Glendale, Arizona decided not to continue with the team’s annual contract, the Arizona Coyotes only had one season left on their home skating rink in Glendale, Arizona. The city said Thursday afternoon that the Coyotes will play the 2021-22 season at the Gila River Arena.
The City of Glendale said in a statement: “With increasing attention to larger and more influential events and the use of city-owned arenas, the City of Glendale has chosen the upcoming 2021-22 The Arizona Coyotes’ operating agreement will not be renewed after the season.” Press release.

The city has an arena, and the contract for another season after the upcoming schedule needs to be signed before December 31. Either party can refuse to extend the contract, and the city has indeed done so. Glendale City Manager Kevin Phelps said on Twitter that the city is grateful for the 18-year partnership with the team, but said the city is looking to further transform its sports and entertainment district.
“The decision not to renew the operating agreement with Coyotes was not made overnight or out of thin air,” Phelps wrote. “We carefully weighed the opinions of our key stakeholders, our expert economists, our arena management company, and our city council.”
Glendale is already the home of the Arizona Cardinals, who play at the State Farm Stadium. The city also hosts the annual Carnival Bowl, one of the top games of the college football bowl season.

The Westgate entertainment district in Glendale is a large area of town, full of bars, restaurants, live music, shops, shopping centers and entertainment venues for all ages. The city thinks it can make it better.
“In the coming year, New York City will announce many new projects that will bring incredible excitement to residents, visitors and stakeholders,” Phelps said. “Just as amazing as today’s sports and entertainment districts, as this momentum continues, the next few years will be more transformative.”
This leaves uncertainty for the coyote.
