LoRa® devices and LoRaWAN® standards are integrated into the “Order Pens” to provide on-demand postal services to thousands of Swiss citizens.
Semtech Corporation announced the cooperation with Swiss Post, the national postal service of Switzerland, and successfully deployed the Swiss Post “Order Pen” using Semtech’s LoRa® equipment and LoRaWAN® standard to provide universal postal services to Swiss citizens and businesses.
By integrating LoRa, Swiss Post Optimize the national postal service ordering process to better serve the community.
Thomas Koch, head of the Swiss Post Internet of Things, said:
“As the Internet of Things (IoT) continues to revolutionize the daily lives of consumers around the world, Order Pen demonstrates the full potential of this Internet of Things technology, LoRa devices and LoRaWAN standards, which can be used to improve community services.”
“Order Pens are easy to deploy and effectively improve the lives of Swiss citizens and businesses.”
As the competitive landscape of express companies continues to expand, customer expectations for services are also evolving to achieve faster delivery times, lower prices and excellent service quality. In response, Swiss Post, with the support of its Swiss-based technology partner Miromico, implemented a four-year “simple and systematic” business strategy to cope with this customer-centric on-demand model, and Issue order pens to remote villages in Switzerland. Visit the post office. In addition, in order to establish contact with every reader, Swiss Post chose to cooperate with Swisscom and Actility to use Switzerland’s only national LoRaWAN network, called Low Power Network (LPN), which covers 97% of the Swiss population.
In four years, the deployment of Order Pens using LoRa equipment and LoRaWAN standards ultimately benefited Swiss citizens and businesses. The direct results of the solution include:
- Order postal services on demand, such as parcel pickup or registered mail
- Thanks to the easy-to-use Order Pen, people who don’t have a smartphone or computer can access postal services more easily
- Up to 10 years of battery-powered operation
- No SIM card is required because the reader runs on the Swisscom low-power network using the LoRaWAN standard
- The user-friendly web application provides an instant list of each order and the ability to manage the equipment used, departments, access rights, supplier relationships, order quantity, and delivery time
Analysis firm ABI Research estimates that the total number of non-cellular low-power wide area (LPWA) network connections in 2026 is expected to reach 1.3 billion, of which LoRa is expected to account for more than half of all non-cellular LPWA connections. LoRaWAN has become the leading standard for the widest range of outdoor and indoor connectivity applications. The difference between devices integrated with LoRa and LoRaWAN standards is an open ecosystem, strong security specifications, two-way communication, mobility optimization, and capacity scalability.
“Cooperating with Swiss Post to provide universal postal services to all Swiss citizens and businesses reflects the unparalleled value that LoRa devices can provide, making the world a smarter planet,” Said Roelof Koopmans, senior director of strategic alliance solutions partners in Semtech’s Wireless and Sensing Products Division. “The strong result of the Swiss Post ordering pen makes Semtech’s LoRa device the de facto wireless platform for the Internet of Things.”
