According to police, a Florida man was arrested on Thursday after trying to kill his grandmother.
In an official statement, the Polk County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that Byron Quintes Dexter was detained for shooting his grandmother Anne Parish in the neck with a 0.22 caliber pistol. Later, he told investigators that the 21-year-old said various strange things about his behavior, including “I killed a black queen, so I won the game” and “I killed the devil.”
“At a quarter past seven, he came out of the bedroom with a semi-automatic pistol, pointed to his 16-year-old sister and said,’What happened?’ Sheriff Grady Judd was in Statement to the press.
In response, the sister gathered several young children in their Polk County home and moved away. Dexter then turned and shot Parish, who was sitting at a nearby table, and immediately ran away.

“His mother was in the room and heard the commotion,” Judd continued. “She entered the room in time and saw Byron running away from the house with a gun.”
The parish flew to Tampa General Hospital by helicopter. She survived the shooting, but was reported to be in critical condition. According to Judd, a bullet stuck in her spine, but she was not paralyzed.
Dexter was later found and arrested by police while riding a bicycle on Highway 37. When he was detained, the pistol was still in his hands. He is now facing charges of attempted first-degree murder, severe assault with weapons, carrying hidden guns, and shooting at an inhabited house.
Judd explained that Dexter did not have any criminal history before this incident, but he did have a history of mental health problems. His family had previously tried to put him in a mental hospital for treatment, but Dexter refused.
Polk County is located in central Florida, east of Hillsboro County, which is home to Tampa, one of the largest cities in the state.
