The Earth Institute Postdoctoral Research Program is now accepting applications for 2022
The Earth Institute’s Sustainability Postdoctoral Research Program is now seeking applications from innovative doctoral students or the most recent Ph.D., Doctor of Medicine, Doctor of Law, or Doctor of Science. Recipients interested in a wide range of sustainable development issues (within 5 years after earning their degree) join its fall 2022 cohort.The institute is particularly interested in qualified candidates from historically underrepresented groups Diversity Scholarship.

this Postdoctoral Research Program of the Earth Institute It is the world’s premier program designed to help those who are committed to a better understanding of key scientific and social issues in global sustainable development. The program provides scholars with the opportunity to acquire and apply the interdisciplinary expertise needed to solve key issues of sustainable development, such as food security, energy systems, climate change impacts, poverty reduction, disease, and environmental degradation.
The program provides a unique knowledge environment that promotes interdisciplinary interaction, research, and education. Postdoctoral researchers from the Earth Institute have joined a multidisciplinary team of outstanding scientists from the Earth Institute and Columbia University. Candidates who develop an interdisciplinary approach during postgraduate studies will find many opportunities to participate in frontier projects in sustainable development research.
Although we encourage research proposals for topics in all areas of sustainable development, in this cycle, we are particularly interested in the following topics, which are the initial thematic priorities/global challenges of sustainable development Climate school:
- Coastal survivability
- Decarbonization (especially negative emission and decarbonization cities)
- Disaster resilience
- Human food
In addition to the broad topics mentioned above, we encourage applicants to focus on the following:
- Environment and climate justice
- Modeling and forecasting
- Communication, policy, legal and financial tools
Application requirements
Candidate must complete Apply online And submit research proposals that contribute to global sustainable development. Candidates can suggest contributions or extensions to existing Earth Institute programs, or the development of new projects that integrate the extensive expertise of the Earth Institute.
In addition to submitting applications and proposals, candidates are strongly encouraged to identify and contact the multidisciplinary mentoring team they want, that is, two or more senior faculty members or research scientists/scholars from Columbia University they wish to work with during their appointment.
The deadline for submitting applications is October 27, 2021. The program will begin in the fall of 2022, with an appointment period of 24 months.
The program is open to U.S. and non-U.S. citizens. All doctoral requirements must be met and the degree awarded within five years before the appointment begins.
