While promoting his upcoming autobiography “Will”, Will Smith recounted his early courtship experience with his current wife Jada Pinkett Smith.
The “Men in Black” star watched the latest episode of “Oprah Dialogue” on Apple TV+ with Oprah Winfrey, and the host read an excerpt from his memoir.
“We drink every day, and we have sex many times a day for four consecutive months,” Winfrey read, quoted from Yahoo Entertainment“I started to wonder if this was a game. Anyway, as far as I am concerned, there are only two possibilities: I will satisfy this woman sexually, or I will die.”
Smith told Winfrey that the early days of their relationship were “spectacular.” After divorcing his first wife, Sheree Zampino, in 1995, he and Jada began dating and tied the knot two years later.
According to the 53-year-old actor, to this day, he and his wife like to talk to each other, and their conversation lasts for several hours at a time. Smith believes that their “problem-solving ability” is the key reason why they can maintain the marriage and stay together.
Smith added: “I have never met someone who talks to me happier and more productively than Jada.”
Last year, the couple raised their eyebrows August Alsina Claiming to have an affair with Jada, saying that she and her husband are in an “open relationship.” The actress later confessed her love affair with Alsina, calling it “entanglement.” Smith also recently stated that he had also been unfaithful.
Even after getting married in 1997, Smith and Jada never had a traditional marriage. Instead, they chose a relationship that focused on “friendship and marriage prison”. Once, they even separated for a while.
“We actually never officially separated,” the actor told Winfrey.
Smith pointed out that 2011 is Jada’s 40th birthday, and that is a critical moment when things happen. He spent three years planning a well-planned party—and she hated the whole thing.
According to Smith, their realization that they can make each other happy is a kind of “fantasy hallucination.” As a result, they agreed to pursue their own happiness and return to the “already happy” relationship, rather than “asking each other to fill our empty glass.”
“We just decided that you have to figure out how to be happy,” Smith continued. “From my point of view, this is a bit more controversial. I thought,’You go to figure it out. You go figure out whether you can be happy and prove to me that it is even possible. I will be me and you be you .'”
Obviously, this decision worked for both of them, because Smith said that their time apart “helped both of us discover the power to love freedom.”
In his September interview GQ MagazineSmith also shared that Jada never believed in “traditional marriages” because she came from a family with “non-traditional relationships.” He added that they chose to give each other “trust and freedom” because they didn’t want marriage to be a “prison.”
“Oprah Dialogue: Will Smith” is now playing on Apple TV+. Smith’s autobiography, “will,” will be released on Tuesday.
