7 ways to shut down negative thoughts and build confidence at work


1. Write down your achievements

Usually, we will wait until it’s time to refresh the resume before performing this operation.

However, before the 2019 review, I started to write down all my work and personal achievements. Trello board.

This could be things like changing the team’s strategy based on recommendations made during the meeting, or even sparing no effort to help others in the company.

I gradually developed the habit of doing this, and soon began to notice how many small things I did had an impact.

It is natural for us to ignore these things in the monotony of daily life.

However, when you really take a step back and analyze the small things that add up, you will find out how much progress you have made as a whole and helped your team or company, which can be very surprising.

Now start with five things from the past month

As an easy way to start incorporating it into your daily work, please force yourself to write down the five small or big things you have achieved at work in the past month.

This can be anything, from having enough confidence to speak at a meeting and sharing your thoughts or suggestions, to helping a colleague organize an email to a client, or even helping your organization win new clients.

2. Grab the high point

Another skill I learned in my life and career was much later than I wanted, and that is to write down, take screenshots and record all the good moments.

This may be a small matter, such as sending a message to a colleague to thank you for helping them complete a task, or a company-wide message praising you for your efforts on a specific task and achievement.

Get in the habit of revisiting these comments and filling the folder with them

Perfect for the moments when you feel that you are “messed up” or worry that you are not doing well enough, these comments are perfect for review.

Not only can they serve as literal evidence of the fact that your job is “good”, but they can also reaffirm your value in the workplace.

When you feel anxious about an upcoming meeting or review, you should also try to get yourself into the habit of viewing these content.

3. Support it with facts

If kind words and small accomplishments don’t work for you, use measurable accomplishments to raise your confidence to the next level.

One fail-safe way to build confidence at work is to spend some time looking back at the past six months, or even the work since you joined, and start analyzing how you have significantly improved or helped the company.

This may be a financial, statistical indicator, or a change in your attribution strategy.

Find anything measurable from your output and look at it at low points

For example, when I am a digital PR, I check the number of reports I get, the number of promotional templates I write, or the number of emails I send that month.

This stopped me immediately and made me feel that I did not add enough value to the team.

I have the facts and data before me, there is nothing to argue about!

This is ideal for situations where you want to negotiate a promotion or raise and need as much help as the management team to convince yourself.

4. Force yourself to justify your worries

If there is a nagging voice in your head telling you:

  • “You are not acting.”
  • “You are in trouble, and your manager is very angry with you.”
  • Or, in extreme cases, “you are on the verge of being fired.”

Pause for a moment.

Try to find reliable evidence, not “because I just know” or “I just have a feeling.” Break it down, whether in your mind or in a notepad.

Write down the source of this worry. This may be because your manager was not with you that morning, or if you were a bit “unfit” for you that week, or if you didn’t reach your goals for several weeks.

Break the loop and find the bottom of it

Now, let you break down the logical reason for yourself-it usually helps me to think from the perspective of what you say to a friend in the same situation.

For example, your boss may have had a bad week and be full of (personal or professional) worries, or may be overwhelmed by his workload.

If you are concerned about poor performance, keep in mind that sometimes you may overfulfill and last for several months.

And remember: you are human. Everyone has good and bad days/weeks/months.

In addition, be aware that there are many factors that affect your performance, and they do not necessarily come from you alone.

Go to the source of your concern and seek closure or assurance

If you are still worried, try to remember if there is an urgent problem, it may be resolved soon, if not, although it sounds difficult, it hasn’t happened yet, so you can’t do anything to change it.

If a few days have passed and you are still worried about not being able to focus on anything else at all, please consider talking to your manager to clarify their views on your performance and whether you can do anything differently.

Try to stifle this worry cycle in the bud as soon as possible, if you let it continue to grow, it may prevent you from actually performing it.

Learn from the positive results of future panic and stick to it

5. Enjoy every victory

We may all feel guilty for worrying about our poor performance or not doing our job well enough. Because of the fast pace of life, we will quickly ignore our victories and great moments.

Throughout my career, I have always felt guilty about it.

However, one of the ultimate ways to build confidence in the workplace is to celebrate victory.

Whether you have been working hard to complete a project, get your first report, or even get a promotion, you will know that this can sometimes be an uphill struggle.

However, when you finally achieve it, it is easy to feel relaxed for a while before moving on to the next task or goal.

6. Adopt a “Why Not Me” mentality

Those with low self-esteem in the workplace will be very familiar with the frustration of seeing someone get a promotion or a job you want yourself to do.

It can even be a small thing to show your team promotion or even take charge of team tasks.

In these situations, you may be too afraid to let yourself come forward, or if you ask directly, refuse too quickly.

If it is the latter, remember that managers need to complete and do their job well.

It’s as simple as realizing that they won’t ask you if they don’t believe you can’t achieve the best results.

If it’s the former, then it’s time to adopt the “Why not me” mentality.

Don’t say “no” to yourself before trying. If someone wants to say “no,” it’s someone else.

Remember, when it comes to opportunities of any kind, everyone is vulnerable to some degree.

No one can guarantee the job or be selected as the salesman.

But if you don’t let yourself go forward, the only guarantee is disappointment.

If you work in a team, please understand that you are performing similar tasks every day.

Therefore, when you find that the only thing that separates you from them is your mentality, you will quickly realize that you have the same chance of success as them.

Then remember, the worst thing you can get is “no”.

7. Work in a nurturing environment

One of the main reasons why many of us suffer from low self-esteem at work is because we are or have been working in an unhealthy or even toxic work environment.

In the past, I asked my manager to tell me that just because of a typo in an article, my job was terrible.

I also have a manager who manipulates me to work overtime until late at night, making me feel that I am not working hard enough.

Moreover, I didn’t realize that things would be different until I started working in a healthy environment.

You will find yourself more motivated in an environment where you can thrive

The career change also showed me how low my self-esteem and confidence in the workplace are.

Within a few months, I found that I was positive about what I did.

This motivates me to work harder and even consider ways to help improve my strategy or working methods.

When you feel the employer’s appreciation and value, your daily work will be much easier, and the subsequent achievement is that you can look back to the past to further build confidence.

Don’t be afraid to leave a toxic workplace. There is always a new job waiting for you!
