China’s first high-speed rail arrives in the capital of Laos


On October 16, citizens of Vientiane, the capital of Laos, witnessed the arrival of the first passenger high-speed train operating on the Laos-China Railway. The railway will be fully operational in December after some trial runs.

The train arrives at the brand new Vientiane Capital Station in the northern part of Vientiane, which is the largest and most important station on the line.

On Saturday, senior Lao and Chinese officials attended a ceremony held at the station, and the electric multiple train unit named Lancang (the former Kingdom of Laos) was delivered. Vientiane Times Report.

Laos is now in the Continental Union, not inland

They confirmed that as part of China’s “One Belt, One Road” initiative, this line will begin operation on December 2, transforming Laos from a landlocked country to a land-connected country.

At present, the railway line is undergoing a comprehensive inspection before it is opened to traffic and will be put into use afterwards. This signifies that Laos is entering a new era of railway transportation, because the latter has never played an important role in the domestic transportation sector of Laos.

In the next phase, the Lao Lieutenant will speed up the construction of facilities along the railway line to help the Laos-China Economic Corridor. According to the report, this will create conditions for economic recovery and promote closer cooperation between Laos and China.

In terms of design, the train was painted red, blue and white to reflect the colors of the Laotian flag. It runs at a maximum speed of 160 kilometers per hour, has 7 carriages, two types of seats, and provides a total of 720 seats.

Railroad shortens travel time from two days to three hours

Compared with road travel, the railway is expected to reduce the transportation cost between southern and northern Laos by 30% to 40%, and shorten the travel time from Vientiane to the China-Laos border from two days to three hours.

The construction of this railway started in December 2016. The total cost is nearly US$6 billion, of which US$3.6 billion was loaned by the Export-Import Bank of China, and the rest was raised by the railway builder and operator Lao China Railway Company. This is approximately Lao’s GDP One-third of the value, which caused people to worry about repayment.

The 422-kilometer railway passes through 75 tunnels with a total length of 198 kilometers. In addition to Vientiane, there are 10 passenger terminals located in Phonhong, Vangvieng, Kasy, Luang Prabang, Nga, Xay, Namor, Nateuy and Boten. And 22 cargo handling stations.
