My journey to become an SEO director has spanned 14 years, working in leading agencies and optimizing for some of the world’s largest brands. I also spent a few years as an internal SEO in some medium-sized companies.
Today, I serve as Senior Vice President of SEO at Acronym.I have worked in the agency for 7 years, responsible for management Global search engine optimization The team consists of more than 20 SEO professionals from the United States, London, Singapore, Berlin and Canada.
Working in an agency is both challenging and rewarding.
I hope to share the story of how I got to where I am today and what it means to be a senior vice president of SEO will also help your career.
Getting started with SEO
I first learned about SEO and internet marketing in 2003, when I was getting a master’s degree in internet business at Mercy College in Dobbs Ferry, New York.
Before that, I worked as a QA expert in the pharmaceutical industry, engaged in auditing and computer verification. However, I was fascinated by the Internet, so I decided to go back to school to learn more about the World Wide Web.

I set up my own pharmaceutical working committee in 2006 and needed more traffic, so I contacted an SEO company for help.
After watching them optimize my website, I understand how interesting and complicated it is. Obsessed with knowing more, I was inspired and started to do more on my own.
I got a job as an SEO expert at Digitgrit (now Zeta Interactive), Build a successful SEO practice In Havas Media, the rest is history.
A typical day for SEO leadership
As a senior leader of the agency, I have done a lot of business development-for example, leading publicity, formulating strategies, showing how SEO works with other channels.
I manage the team to ensure that we have the right tools, resources, employees, processes and services to manage customers and prospects, in addition Generate thought leadership materials.
I also read a lot of content to understand what is happening in the industry. When we work with global suppliers and international teams, it is very important to have other perspectives and new technologies.

My master’s degree in e-commerce helped me gain basic knowledge of how the Internet works. Over the years, it has undergone tremendous changes, but I have learned that understanding the basic principles will help you understand and appreciate the history and the backbone of the connection of things more deeply.
Having worked in this industry for so long, I have also learned a lot, especially when it comes to working with international and domestic customers.
Finally, I also realized that you should always conduct due diligence and dig deeper. Focus on commodities and strategies that drive business results.
Many organizations provide similar services. Why should customers work with your organization instead of the other 5 to 10 organizations in the RFP?
Always make yourself different. Listen to your customers and make sure you understand their goals, challenges, key performance indicators, and what they hope to gain from participating.
Plan to show who is doing what, and set realistic expectations early so that there will be no surprises in the future, that is, things are not implemented, etc. Create compelling case studies and provide unique perspectives on SERP updates and changes.
The challenge of managing SEO at the executive level
For customers and SEOs that span time zones, different languages, and multiple search engines, it is not easy to manage SEO in a global agency.
Prioritize, communicate and Powerful process Essential to success.
The ability to consider cultural and language differences and determine which countries/regions will provide the best return on investment is critical.
Another challenge facing executives, especially at the corporate level, is that some customers’ needs are extremely complex.
One day, you may be dealing with a migration that failed when they worked with the previous agency.
You may have a new customer who will lose a lot of traffic and revenue after becoming a new customer Negatively affected by core updates.
You may be using limited resources, etc.
I once had a client who insisted on using a bunch of keywords used internally by the company instead of their audience. Educating customers why this is not a good idea is the key, which requires tact and personnel management skills.

Working with web developers hired by certain brands, we are often forced to use techniques that contradict common SEO wisdom, so we must find a solution.
SEO in principle basic method – But every new customer brings its own changes.
This is the beauty of working in an organization that has strong leadership and focuses on training and education. This means that they often encounter challenges and continue to develop solutions.
Find inspiration and thought leadership
The people in the SEO community I admire most are Mike Graham. Mike is a pioneer in this field and a great visionary. He is talking about something 20 years ago, and now it is getting results.
The other person I admire in the industry is Brian Dean from Backlinko. They provided amazing content and conducted impressive research.
I also respect Hamlet Baptist Church, Passed away tragically. I learned a lot from him in a short period of time, and we plan to do some parties together.

I am also a big fan Jim Boykin From the network marketing ninja.
I recommend that every SEO expert keep up with the latest technology. We live in a dynamic world, and automation is the key. There are some great platforms and solutions that make a lot of noise in this area and really help simplify the SEO process, so we can focus more on strategy.
Evaluate them and see if they can help you achieve KPIs internally and externally.
In addition, evaluate and test different methods to understand the work that drives the overall business goals and objectives, and most importantly, conversion.
If you don’t, it’s time to refocus. SEO is about bringing qualified traffic to a website that converts into customers.
Don’t be afraid to fail and accept new challenges; this is part of innovation and overall development.
Do your own research. Try to gain as much experience as possible in paid search, programmatic, social, and analytics, but don’t forget to develop leadership skills. You need to see a bigger picture, because it all has to do with leadership.
