Cambodia’s Ministry of Commerce recently reported that the value of Cambodia’s bicycle exports increased by 21 percent from January to October 2021 compared to the same period last year. The ministry said exports rose to $514 million, with European countries the largest importers.
Still, Southeast Asia’s largest bicycle producer and exporter has apparently lost market share in Europe during this period.
According to the latest European Union (EU) customs data, imports of Cambodian bicycles fell by 15% to 753,587 units between January 2021 and August 2021.
This means that Cambodia has either been expanding into other markets outside the EU, or that average export prices have risen during this period, but the ministry did not specify, only pointing to the US, UK, Europe, Canada, Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) ( ASEAN), Japan, China and South Korea remain the country’s main export partners.
Notably, the ministry said the Covid-19 pandemic had “little negative impact on bicycle exports”.
Six bicycle factories in southeastern province; planned e-bike factory
Most of Cambodia’s bicycle manufacturing plants are invested by Taiwanese companies and are located in the special economic zone around Bawei town in Chai Zhen province, which borders Vietnam in the southeast. According to the ministry, there are six bicycle factories operating in Chaizhen.
With the recent announcement of the construction of a dedicated electric bike factory, the country’s focus on ordinary bikes is expected to change, according to reports. Phnom Penh Post.
German bicycle maker Leisger plans to start producing electric bikes, batteries and other components in the Chaizhen Special Economic Zone. The Cambodia Development Council has approved the final registration certificate for Leisger Cambodia’s US$13 million business, which is expected to create more than 250 jobs, the report said.
