Mapping marine faults in Kingston Bay

From January 13th to 15th, we transited from the Jamaica Seaway to Kingston Bay to map sea structures near land. Movement along these faults is thought to be related to the 1907 Kingston earthquake, which shook the island’s capital with a magnitude of 6.2.

The multinuclear instrument recovered layers of sediment called “event deposits.” These layers are notable for their chocolate brown color. Deposits will be dated and analysed for their chemical composition and physical properties. The goal is to understand the processes that trigger their deposition: are they earthquakes? Is it a hurricane?

On the gravity coring tube is a probe that measures heat flow.It penetrates sediments and measures changes in heat flow associated with friction in the fault zone, giving us information about the region Seismic Potential.
