The ability to overcome problems is not something we are born with, but something we must learn. As a parent, one of your responsibilities is to help your child learn how to solve problems in a healthy and successful way so they can easily do it when you’re not around.I have been with a East Sussex private school Share some tips on how to teach your kids to be better problem solvers.
be a good example
When teaching your child something, the best thing you can do for your child is to demonstrate the behavior yourself so they can learn from the best. In other words, if you imitate successful problem-solving skills, your child will too. When dealing with a problem, talk to your child about how you resolved the problem through motion. If you are stressed or overwhelmed, try to protect your child from the situation as they will see this as an appropriate way to respond to the problem.
Identify the problem
If your child doesn’t really understand what the problem is at first, they will have a hard time solving it. So, to help them spot the problem in the first place, just say it aloud. For example, they may feel overwhelmed by deciding which subjects to study at A Level. Try to narrow down the question further by stating facts, such as “You are struggling to choose between chemistry and physics because you like both”. Once the specific problem is identified, it is easier to identify a solution.
Discuss different solutions
Help your child understand that when there is a problem, there is often more than one solution. Encourage them to come up with many different ideas on how to approach the problem, and then discuss the pros and cons of each idea. Once they realize that there are multiple ways to deal with something, they may immediately feel more comfortable with the situation because it doesn’t feel doom and gloom.
be patient
Becoming a great problem solver doesn’t happen overnight, and your kids make mistakes too. Having said that, try to be patient with them. Give them a chance to solve their problems, and don’t be hard on them if they can’t successfully solve every problem they face.
