Trying to build a more consistent SEO structure within your organization?
Wish there was a more standardized, easier-to-follow solution to every SEO fire?
We know – no two days are the same in SEO.
However, finding a consistent approach that delivers meaningful impact is surprisingly easy.
And – it works whether you’re a company insider, an agency, or a freelance consultant.
On March 23rd, I hosted a webinar hosted by Deepcrawl’s Jamie Indigo and Michelle Race.
In describing SEO as a dance, they offer a four-step process for tackling challenges head-on as they arise and preventing SEO fires before they begin.
Here is a summary of the webinar.

Step 1: Gain more visibility into your SEO issues
We can’t solve problems we can’t see, so it’s crucial to ask some basic questions when dealing with SEO issues:
- What am I looking at?
- where do i look?
- How can I see things?
To dig deeper, you also need specific criteria and questions to ask yourself:
- Does the expected website behavior match the behavior in real life?

- Are there new data sources available?
- Are you taking advantage of all URL prefix variations?
- Is some key information only available in prefix or domain attributes?
- Can I view data sources in new ways?
- Is new data available in old favorites?
- Can I combine data tables for enhanced insight?
Step 2: Start Diagnosis
Once you see the problem, you can now measure it.
To be a great partner for development teams and other stakeholders in the dance of SEO, here are a few things to consider:
- Don’t start from the wrong angle: Avoid sending only problem headers and exports of affected URLs.
- Learning steps: Thoroughly investigate, identify and understand each step to be addressed.
- Make sure your partner knows these actions: Use a variety of tools to diagnose, replicate, and demonstrate problems.

Now that you understand the steps, here are some factors and questions to consider in order to fully present to your partner:
- Where do I look for issues? (data source)
- What is an element?
- How is it measured?
- How to break? (repo step)
- How do you help the team understand?
- Know who to assign and remind.
- Follow best practices when creating tickets.
