Singapore-based craft brewer Brewerkz Brewing has created a “unique Singaporean premium raw beer” called Newbrew, which is made from recycled water and will be available in limited quantities in late April.
Described as a “tropical golden ale with exceptional flavours, a clean, ultra-crisp aftertaste and a smooth toasted honey-like finish”, the beer uses premium reclaimed water from Singapore’s National Water Authority.
According to the agency, it uses reclaimed water from municipal and industrial sources to produce clean and safe drinking water, treated with the latest proven membrane technology, and purified through microfiltration, reverse osmosis and UV disinfection. It turned out to be called “Newater”.
Purified ultra-clean water
Introduced by the Singapore Water Authority in 2002, Newater is mainly used in industries that require ultra-clean water, and is also used to replenish water reservoirs in Singapore. Along with other measures such as desalinating seawater, importing water and harvesting rainwater, recycling used water is one of the ways the city-state ensures its water security.
Limited-edition Newbrew made from Newater will be available in supermarkets, online platforms, as well as in Brewerkz restaurants and electronics stores. The beer will be sold in three-cans for S$4.50 ($3.30) a can, the company said in a statement on April 8.
German barley malt and Norwegian yeast
In addition to recycled water, the beer is made with ingredients such as German barley malt, citrus and Calypso hops, and Norwegian farmhouse yeast kveik.
Newbrew isn’t the first beer to be brewed using recycled water. Due to the growing popularity of this green, sustainable beer, breweries in countries such as Germany, Canada and the United States have partnered with water companies to create their own versions.
