medical technology announced Wednesday Its precision medicine solution, which integrates a patient’s complete genetic history into their EHR, is now available at Golden Valley Memorial Healthcare. A rural health organization in Clinton, Missouri, was the first to deploy an EHR provider’s solution called Expanse Genomics.
According to Westwood, Massachusetts, Expanse allows providers to order genetic testing directly in the EHR and analyze and interpret the results displayed directly on the patient chart medical technology.
“Currently, most genomic data is stored in scanned PDFs or reference laboratory databases, which must be retrieved through APIs (application execution interfaces),” Jennifer Ford, product manager at Meditech, said in an email. “The Expanse Genomics solution stores data discretely in the Expanse EHR managed by the organization. It receives data directly from the lab and displays it all in one place, designed for clinicians. This data can then be further used for built-in clinical decision support.”
Using the solution, GVMH providers are now able to tailor care to a patient’s genetic profile to deliver more accurate treatment, according to the health organization and Meditech.
Ford said the EHR provider expects another early adopter to come online in the coming months and is working with a number of organizations in the U.S., Canada and the U.K. interested in the solution. She added that Meditech sees an opportunity to use this solution in many areas, including behavioral health, precision nutrition and research.
Other EHRs have also been integrating genetic data to help improve patient care. These include Epic, which announced last year that it was Collaborate with Basic Medicine Integrate genomic insights into its EHR.
Meditech’s genomic solutions have been used by GVMH in multiple clinical areas, including its cancer centers. Meditech said Expanse will provide physicians with genetic data on a patient’s disease predisposition, drug metabolism and tumor characteristics to improve patient outcomes.
“Having a patient’s complete genetic history is critical to effectively treating patients and providing a more personalized care experience,” said William Dailey, GVMH’s chief medical information officer, in a statement. “Expanse Genomics is an intuitive The solution provides our clinicians with actionable data for each patient when they need it, and it creates a clear path equipped with the clinical decision support tools necessary to make informed decisions.”
