YouTube begins featuring Shorts videos on more platforms on mobile and desktop, including a dedicated carousel in the Trending section.
Expanding Shorts’ visibility has the potential to expand their reach, as they can now be found in more places throughout the YouTube site and app.
This marks the first meaningful update to Shorts this year, which is notable given the stagnation in rolling out new features.
YouTube Shorts launched in 2020 with a lot of hype, followed by a series of quick updates over the next year.
Updates have slowed down since then, but it looks like Shorts is back on YouTube’s radar.
These updates may also make shorts a point of interest for many new viewers. Let’s take a look at what has changed.
YouTube Shorts Shelf in Popular Pages
YouTube’s Trending page is getting a carousel dedicated to short videos — or what the company calls it shorts rack.
With the addition of the Shorts shelf, short videos will be filtered from the list of popular videos.
Shorts will now appear at the top of the page in their own carousel.
The goal behind this change is to improve the overall experience of trending pages, although it also has the effect of making shorts easier to spot.
The Shorts shelf will display the most popular videos from the user’s location.
YouTube has begun rolling out the service in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Brazil, Germany, India, France, Indonesia, and MENA (Middle East and North Africa), with more regions to follow.
YouTube clips on desktop and mobile web
Shorts are gaining popularity on desktop and mobile browsers with the addition of new tabs and homepage carousels.
With this update, YouTube aims to create a more consistent experience for Shorts across platforms.
Previously, shorts were more discoverable on the YouTube app than on the YouTube website.
Now it’s easier for people to discover and watch Shorts on desktop, tablet and mobile web.
