Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) is exploring the possibility of setting up a new production facility in Singapore to help address the ongoing global shortage of chips. Wall Street Journal report.
The world’s largest independent semiconductor maker and foundry chip maker, one of Taiwan’s largest companies and the sole chip supplier to U.S. consumer electronics giant Apple, is planning a new multi-billion-dollar factory in the city-state, And may receive government funding, reports in Singapore quoted people familiar with the matter as saying,
TSMC is responsible for making all of the custom silicon chips for Apple’s cellphone and computer products. While Apple’s chip orders take precedence over many other companies, limiting the impact of shortages on Apple customers, TSMC remains plagued by global supply chain issues.
Capacity transfer
The proposed production line in Singapore will make chips using a 7- to 28-nanometer manufacturing process, an older production technology. While Apple’s latest chips are made on TSMC’s 5-nanometer process and therefore cannot be produced at the new factory in Singapore, the expansion will free up capacity at other Apple chip factories and help ease global shortages.
In addition to plans to build a new factory in Singapore, TSMC is also building a $12 billion factory in Arizona, the United States, to produce 5-nanometer chips. TSMC’s main fab is in Taiwan, but it also has two in China, in Shanghai and Nanjing, with factories in Camas, Washington, and design centers in Austin, Texas, and San Jose, California.
TSMC is also building new factories in Japan with help from the Japanese government and investment from Japanese electronics giant Sony.
