Tip #4: Make use of log files.

What is a log file?

They are text files containing the following records:

  • All requests the server receives from humans and crawlers.
  • Your website’s response to these requests.

They show the actual behavior of crawlers and are crucial to understanding how they crawl your site.

Companies need easy access to log file insights for content teams to be successful.

When you have these insights, you can start thinking critically and get answers to the following questions:

  • Has Google already crawled these new pages?
  • Did Google refresh your updated page?
  • Did Google try to crawl the page when there was a problem with the page?
  • How often, on average, are your pages recrawled?

Upgrade your SEO with log files

Log files are traditionally:

  • Inefficient and time-consuming.
  • Traditionally stored in silos in Excel spreadsheets, this makes insights difficult to gain.
  • Usually only checked once a year.

Fortunately, there are easier ways to obtain these log files than traditional methods.

The answer is in the CDN log.

What are CDN logs?

CDN logs are databases stored on services like CloudFlare’s CDN, which are basically global networks with replicas of sites.

Many of these CDN sites keep logs.

These logs are updated in real-time and are usually available through a plug-and-play connector.

Connect these log insights to your content inventory and you can view data such as how often newly published posts are crawled.

So instead of filtering Excel data tables, you can quickly view log files this way.

Valuable insights from your CDN logs

When you use CDN logs to improve crawling and indexing, you will be able to obtain data that can help answer the following questions:

New page CDN Log Insights

  • How long does it take for a search engine to crawl a new page?
  • Can you speed up your crawl with improved content promotion or internal linking?
  • Is there a correlation between crawl frequency and internal linking?
  • Can you move from manually parsing raw logs to automatically extracting insights?

Update Page CDN Log Insights

  • Has Google accepted your improvements?
  • How long does it take to refresh the page after a Google update?
  • Has there been increased crawl activity since the change was made?

Robots.txt CDN Log Insights

  • Did Google recrawl the new robots.txt directive?

XML Sitemap CDN Log Insights

  • Did Google recrawl my XML Sitemap after an update?

Tip #5: Leverage Google Search Console.

Once you see real-time log file insights and notice that search engines haven’t yet crawled your newly published page, it can be helpful to check Google Search Console.

This gave Google a nudge.
