This is pretty much a standard question: SEO clients want to know how quickly they can see the results of their link building efforts.
It makes sense that they want to make positive changes as soon as possible – a lot of time, work and money goes into building quality links.
In practice, however, it may take 3 to 12 months to see any change in your site’s visibility.
It is also helpful to consider some of the important factors that affect link building impact speed.
Let’s look at these factors and a few examples of how link building speed can deliver results in different niches.
6 aspects of link building effectiveness
From my experience building links for different companies, I’ve noticed these factors, but results will vary on a case-by-case basis.
Let’s break down these factors that affect link building effectiveness in more detail.
1. Permissions of the site
Domain Rank (DR) is a metric that includes how many backlinks a website receives from trusted sources. Generally, the higher the DR, the more trustworthy the website is.
You can check your site’s DR with tools like Ahrefs, Semrush, MOZ, and Majestic.
Sites with good DR initially will see results faster.
The lower the DR of your website, the longer you wait for the links you build to bring about positive change. But it also depends on the niche.
Generally, the DR of a B2B brand should be no less than 60, and the DR of a B2C company should be no less than 30. If your domain ranks low, you will have to wait longer for results.
Essentially, a website with good online authority may have more chances to rank better.
2. Positive and negative traffic trends
In short, positive trends accelerate the effectiveness of link building campaigns, while negative trends hinder results in the short term.
Google tracks dynamics and prioritizes those resources that show steady growth.
If a site’s traffic trends are negative, it can be challenging to return to the initial point of growth for reasons that affect the site’s relevance and trust score.
3. Brand awareness
One of the key factors in link building is whether the website you are linking from is an authority brand.
A useful metric is % of brand traffic The given website receives.
You can use the following tools to check Sam Rush.
4. Page Type
In general, building links to content pages leads to positive results faster than business pages.
Generally, business pages target only a few keywords, greatly reducing your chances of success.
Also, keep in mind that Google Search provides preferences for content pages.
5. The level of competition in the niche
In B2B, for example, link building is popular, so choosing this strategy to grow your website may not be enough.you have to combine it with Produce high-quality content and grow your brand.
But if you come from B2C, link building can be your competitive advantage.
6. Monthly and overall link building budget
The average cost per link varies across the industry. For example, Ahrefs found that it was about $350 while the siege Estimated around $500.
However, the price per link depends on how authoritative the particular website is. For example, a link on a site with a domain rating of 50 by Ahrefs and 2,000 monthly organic traffic is not the same as a link on a site with a DR of 80 and more than 100,000 organic traffic.
As a result, link building agencies often set different pricing based on a website’s domain rating and organic traffic.
Based on this, a good starting point might include a monthly fee of $3,000 and an overall budget of $30,000.
However, you may need to invest at least $10,000 per month in certain areas to start seeing results.
And, it’s always good to be realistic about your personal situation and focus on targeting the right keywords rather than hit and miss.
Which factor is the most critical?
They all play an important role to some extent.
However, it’s important to build links on branded websites that sell real products or services.
These sites have the highest growth potential, and the impact of building links to these sites will only grow over time.
5 Examples of How Link Building Works in Different Fields
Okay, we’ve discussed the factors that can speed up or slow down the results of a link building campaign.
But to avoid empty claims, let’s take a look at some link building campaigns and how quickly they can show positive change.
The first example is a real challenge, and many might see it as a failure.
This site has zero organic traffic, no authority, no branded traffic, and comes from a very competitive niche – digital marketing.
So, it’s no surprise that the site didn’t show any change in organic traffic over the first eight months, despite an increase in the number of keywords the site ranks for in the SERPs.
Then, after nearly 12 months of work, more tangible results emerged. The site received more than 250 links with a total budget of $100,000.
This is the current trend on the site. From January 2021 to January 2022, the number of referring domains gradually increased.
Screenshot from Ahrefs, May 2022The graph below shows the time the site’s organic traffic started to grow compared to the time it started to build links—about 10 months later.
Screenshot from Ahrefs, May 2022According to Ahrefs, as of now, the brand’s website has had 3,000 organic traffic.
However, Googling the console shows it’s even higher.

The next example is a B2C brand in the home improvement space.
The company built 58 links to its website with a total budget of less than $20,000.
Link building work begins in December 2021.

You can see how the traffic has grown in the graph below.
Screenshot from Ahrefs, May 2022Here are a few more examples of how B2B vs. B2C link building results can emerge.
This is a new B2B branded website with absolutely no traffic. The site received 40 links for a total budget of $15,000 and was ranked by search terms that provided $1,600 worth of traffic.
Screenshot from Ahrefs, May 2022The first impact of the link building effort came three months later — roughly from November 2021 to December 2021.
Screenshot from Ahrefs, May 2022It is worth mentioning that it is a brand new brand.
However, if the brand is already well known, will the results of link building be faster?
Yes. This company has been around for a while and its website gets a lot of traffic and links. It also comes from a competitive SEO tool.
In this case, the site got a slight boost, with only 27 links to a page that already had some links. So it’s 27 links compared to the 40 links the previous site had to build.
As a result, its organic traffic doubled after five months.
Screenshot from Ahrefs, May 2022The site has to build fewer links, but it also works faster. The link building campaign starts in August 2021 and you can see the first results in October 2021.
Another example is a new B2C brand selling supplements in the self-care space.
It built more than 50 links to its website with a total budget of $12,000.
Screenshot from Ahrefs, May 2022As for the results, the link building campaign kicked off towards the end of 2021, with the first changes in organic traffic appearing two to three months later.
Screenshot from Ahrefs, May 2022Sometimes link building campaigns for B2C brands are delivered faster, proving that link building in this niche is far less competitive than B2B.
However, if you look at all the examples, you will see that the time when a company starts seeing its first tangible results depends on each case.
