SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) — Prosecutors have charged a Las Vegas man with a hate crime in a mass shooting at a Taiwanese American church lunch in California that left one dead and five injured .
Authorities added hate crime charges to the murder and attempted murder charges against David Zhou, 68, the Orange County District Attorney’s Office said on June 17.
Authorities said Zhou opened fire at a May lunch meeting at the Irvine Taiwanese Presbyterian Church in Laguna Woods. A 52-year-old doctor who brought his mother to an event was killed.
Authorities say Zhou Enlai was born and raised in Taiwan out of hatred for Taiwan, where his family was forced to leave mainland China after the Communist Party took power.
Zhou is expected to be arraigned on August 19. He did not enter a plea in his first court appearance last month. A message seeking comment was sent June 17 to the public defender for Chou, listed in online court records, who is being held without bail.
