Vietnam’s economic planners have floated the idea of creating smart cities in 41 of the country’s 63 provinces and cities to “accelerate sustainable urban development,” according to local media.
The overall goal is to drive the digital transformation of urban governance by creating smart government solutions, including functions such as digitizing mobility, mobility, energy and society.
The plans are part of the Politburo resolution on the planning, management and sustainable development of Vietnam’s urban areas by 2030, with a vision by 2045. Rural areas are also included in the transition, providing solutions for farmers and remote communities alike.
Ruan Dexian, vice chairman of the Central Economic Commission of the Communist Party of China, said 41 provinces and cities have or are developing smart city development projects and some smart city services.
Multiple smart solutions
These solutions include smart travel service applications, smart transportation solutions and security applications. There are also applications in other fields, such as smart education and smart medical care.
Hien noted that smart city solutions still have a lot of potential in the country. While they initially focused on providing smart city services to residents and managers, the next step will be solutions for smart city planning and construction management. At the same time, both government employees and citizens need upskilling and training, he said.
Holistic digital transformation
Ultimately, Vietnam aims to digitally transform based on the three pillars of digital governance, digital economy and digital society.
This will include the deployment of smart city planning and management, smart transportation and infrastructure, smart energy, which in the long run will support the emergence of smart economies, smart city dwellers, smart communities and a digital society in general.
Intelligent Address System
An example of a county-level smart solution is Deployment of digital addresses Serving all Vietnamese households and businesses by 2025. The strategy aims to make the postal industry an essential part of the country’s digital economy infrastructure by making it the foundation of e-commerce.
By 2025, the strategy also plans to have all farmers operating on an e-commerce platform developed by the postal company.
The Hanoi government will carry out pilot projects starting from important central districts by combining the new national digital address platform with the digital map of the capital city. Services using digital addresses will be included, including travel, fire and fire suppression, and postal services.
