The University of Michigan named Santa Ono its new president on July 13, making him the first Asian-American to hold the university’s position.
The school said in a news release that its board of directors voted unanimously to approve Ono’s appointment at a special meeting held the same day.
Ono, born to Japanese immigrants, was the president of the University of Cincinnati, and is currently the president and vice president of the University of British Columbia. He also served as senior vice provost and vice provost at Emory University.
“I look forward to embracing the University community and supporting their education, scholarship, innovation and service,” said the 59-year-old biomedical researcher and former professor.
