These four are the first foreigners to be deported for violating Bali’s stricter Covid-19 regulations, as the beach-sworn island is cracking down on rampant violations.
These restrictions are part of Indonesia’s stricter virus containment measures implemented last week in Bali, the hard-hit capital Jakarta, and densely populated Java, where new infections have surged and hospitals have been overwhelmed.
On Monday, the worst-hit countries in Southeast Asia reported a record 40,427 new infections and 891 deaths in the past 24 hours.
Stricter restrictions in Indonesia will continue until at least July 20.
Compared with other parts of Indonesia, Bali is less affected, but the number of new infections and deaths is on the rise. A total of nearly 56,000 cases and 1,648 deaths have been reported on the island.
Tourist-dependent Bali, which used to attract millions of foreign tourists every year, has launched an aggressive vaccination program to prepare for the reopening of mass tourism that has been put on hold this month.
