Faculty Spotlight: Sean Hoyt
Shaun Hoyte is an adjunct professor in the Sustainability Management Program. He will teach the program’s capstone workshop this fall, where he will work with students to create meaningful solutions to real-world sustainability challenges.
Adjunct Professor Shaun Hoyte is a sustainability professional focused on addressing climate-related risks and identifying the impacts and opportunities they create for our communities. Headquartered in New York City, Hoyte has over 15 years of experience in the energy and utilities sector and combines hands-on industry knowledge with technical expertise to design solutions that maximize revenue and Advancing a Equitable Clean Energy Economy.
Hoyt has been named the recipient of the 2022 Harlem YMCA Industrial Achievement Award for her diverse market knowledge and outstanding performance. He holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Manhattan College and graduated summa cum laude.Hoyt earned a master’s degree Sustainability Management from Columbia University, where he remains an active member of the community. He is a member of the Columbia Alumni Association Board of Directors, a member of the Sustainability Management Advisory Board, and is Vice Chair of the School of Professional Studies Alumni Advisory Board, and he is the recipient of the 2020 Alumni Association Dean’s Award for Excellence.
What initially motivated you to pursue the field of sustainability?
There is a lot to learn, and the field of sustainability continues to grow rapidly. I wanted to pursue a career that would both stimulate my curiosity and allow me to have a direct positive impact on protecting our planet.
What initially attracted you to the Sustainability Management Program?
I was looking for an interdisciplinary project that would provide me with the necessary tools and resources to solve some of the most complex problems in the world. Having the flexibility to choose courses that match my interests while learning from top industry experts and professors brought me here.
What courses will you be teaching this fall, and what excites you the most?
This fall, I will be teaching at the Integrated Capstone Symposium. I am excited to work with clients and students to create meaningful solutions to real-world challenges that affect people and the environment.
What changes do you hope to see in the future of sustainability?
I would like to see the field of sustainable development push the boundaries of what is possible to ensure the well-being of present and future generations. Investigating bold and disruptive solutions to interface with existing natural resources and society can harmonize a more sustainable ecosystem. Sustainability should no longer be seen as a boon to business – it’s a necessity.
What advice do you have for students pursuing sustainable careers?
Sustainability is a business case, it’s a way of life – embrace it! Enjoy exploring new ideas, making small changes to your lifestyle, networking with talented new people, and relying on the industry as a collective resource for comprehensive solutions. The opportunities in this field are endless, and the mission is more important than ever.
