SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Last month, three children, ages 11, 13 and 14, and an 18-year-old man assaulted and robbed a 70-year-old Asian woman in her San Francisco apartment building , two of whom have been arrested, police said Aug. 15.

San Francisco Police Chief Bill Scott said the woman was outside the Chinatown building when the suspect approached and spoke to her on July 31.

Unable to understand them due to a language barrier, Scott said she walked into the lobby of the building and the suspect followed her.

They then beat and robbed her before fleeing, he said. The attack was recorded on surveillance video.

“The victim was taken to a local hospital and thankfully her injuries were not life-threatening,” said Scott, who did not identify the woman.

The attack comes amid a wave of attacks against Asian Americans in San Francisco and across the country that began as the coronavirus pandemic spread across the United States.

Scott described the young suspect’s age as sad and shocking.

He said detectives identified the suspects as 18-year-old Daryl Moore of Oakland and three teenagers.

The teenager’s name will not be released and the 11-year-old will not be charged for age reasons. The other three face charges of robbery, elder abuse, false imprisonment and conspiracy, Scott said.

The suspects, Moore, 11 and 13, were apprehended by Santa Clara County authorities on Aug. 10 by officers from the Milpitas Police Department on charges of unrelated crimes there, he said.

Moore is still being held in the Santa Clara County Jail. It is unclear whether he has a lawyer who can speak on his behalf.

The 13-year-old suspect was registered at Santa Clara Juvenile Hall and transferred to the Alameda County Detention Facility, where officials arrested him under a San Francisco warrant, Scott said.

The 11-year-old was transferred from Santa Clara to the care of the Alameda County Assessment Center. Scott said the 14-year-old has not been found, but a warrant is in place.
