Just Stop Oil (JSO) said its 250 supporters marched in central London on Sunday, disrupting traffic in shopping districts and tourist centres, before a sit-in on Waterloo Bridge.
A JSO spokesman said: “We will continue civil resistance until this government takes immediate steps to meet our need to end the cost of living and climate crisis by stopping new oil and gas.
“We need to start a rapid transition to a fairer society, determined by ordinary people and paid for by those who profit from the destruction of humanity.”
They said their protests began when activists took to the streets in three separate marches from Euston, Paddington and Waterloo around noon.
Parts of the city including Oxford Street, Radgate Hill and Southampton Street were disrupted before the groups met in Covent Garden before sitting on the side of the road to block Waterloo Bridge.
The protests came a day after thousands of activists gathered across the country to protest soaring energy prices and the climate crisis.
Demonstrations took place in cities including London, Glasgow and Belfast. They also coincided with postal and rail strikes, raising average electricity bills by almost £600.
“If you’re angry about the cost of living crisis, the energy crisis, the climate crisis, these are all part of a crisis,” said one demonstrator at Sunday’s protest calling herself Louise.
The Metropolitan Police said 31 people were arrested in central London, including 29 for allegedly obstructing a motorway following a protest at Waterloo Bridge.
“The protests are now over. We thank the public for their patience,” a police spokesman said.
