Vietnamese electric car maker VinFast will ship about 5,000 vehicles to customers in the U.S., Canada and Europe in early November, according to a statement from parent company Vingroup.
Global deliveries will begin a month later, the statement said.
The announcement came after VinFast began delivering the first batch of 100 VF8 all-electric sports utility vehicles (SUVs) from its factory in the northern port city of Haiphong to local customers on Sept. 10.
competitive price
Pricing for the midsize SUV will start at $57,000 with the battery and $42,200 with a monthly subscription to the battery, the automaker said on its website.
Le Thi Thu Thuy, global chief executive of VinFast, said the company has registered nearly 65,000 reservations globally and expects to sell 750,000 electric vehicles annually internationally by 2026, starting with the VF8 and VF9 all-electric SUVs.
In March this year, VinFast said it would build a production plant in North Carolina, USA, with an initial estimated annual production capacity of 150,000 electric vehicles. It tapped banks in July to raise at least $4 billion for the project and has secured about $2 billion in incentives for the factory, which it intends to start producing in 2024.
Styling gets applause, but battery range doesn’t
Automotive journalists praised the VF8 and VF9 models for their “striking styling” by Italian design houses Pininfarina and Torini, powerful drivetrains and competitive pricing. On the downside, they criticize mediocre battery life, minimalist interiors, and more.
