Killin is one of those places in Scotland that you don’t know much about. I join a lot of groups about Scotland on social media, I only see it pop up occasionally, and it’s usually from locals rather than people from abroad.
But Killin is ideal for locals and tourists alike!
It’s just a small town at the western end of Lake Tay, surrounded by beautiful hills and mountains with a waterfall running through it. It’s as picturesque as you’d imagine a Scottish village would be. Let’s just say they don’t look that way!
Once you’re there it’s so easy to get around, you won’t need your car, or you can take public transport to get here and enjoy it just as much.
One of Killeen’s main attractions is Dochart Falls, a series of rapids and waterfalls in the center of town. You can walk along the banks to get a closer look at the falls, and there are several restaurants and cafes in the area with great views of the falls.
Killin has a vibrant local culture and hosts many traditional events throughout the year, including their own Highland Games, held in August, featuring traditional Scottish games such as craps and tug-of-war.
Killeen is also a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts. It is an ideal base for many hiking trails in the area, including the popular Ben Lawers track, which offers stunning views over Loch Tay and the surrounding mountains. The area is also popular for fishing, kayaking and other water sports.
Keeling’s History
In addition to these, Killin has a rich history and there are several historical sites in the area as it is believed to be thousands of years old.
One of the most famous sights is the ruins of Finlarig Castle, a fort built in the 17th century. There are also several ancient standing stones and tumulus not far away.
In the 17th century, Keeling was a bustling center for the wool trade and many factories were built in the area. Also during this time, the area was the scene of several battles between rival clans, including the Battle of Killiecrankie in 1689.
By the 19th century, Keeling had become a popular tourist destination due to its stunning natural beauty and these famous historical sites. Dorchat Falls in particular became a popular attraction and was visited by many notable figures of the time, including Queen Victoria.
Today, Killeen continues to attract visitors from around the world to explore its rich history, enjoy its natural beauty and experience its vibrant local culture.
Things to do in Killeen
Although Killin is a small place, there is plenty to do in the village itself and surrounding areas within a half hour or so drive.
View of Dohat Falls
The Falls of Dochart is a stunning waterfall that can be seen from the center of Killin. The falls are especially impressive after heavy rains, when the water rushes violently over the rocks.
It is possible to go down and walk on the rocks around the falls, but you don’t want to do that when the river is high.
Explore Finlalig Castle
Situated on a hill outside Killin, Finlarig Castle was once the stronghold of the MacNab family. The castle is now in ruins, but its atmospheric remains are well worth exploring.
It was built by ‘Black’ Duncan Campbell of Glenorchy, who also built several other castles, and it was even visited by Highland outlaw Rob Roy McGregor in 1713.
Walk along Loch Tay
Loch Tay is a beautiful freshwater loch stretching for over 15 miles. Autumn is especially lovely when the leaves on all the surrounding mountains change color. There are several scenic walks along the lake, including the Rob Roy Way through Killeen.

The Munro is a Scottish mountain that stands over 3,000 feet (914.4 meters) high, and in nearby Ben Lawrs National Nature Reserve you’ll find two! Both Ben Lawers and Beinn Ghlas could be climbed (or “bagged”) in a single day.
The hill offers stunning views of the surrounding area, but is also a challenge.
There is also the short, steep Sron A’ Chlachain walk, which offers iconic views of Loch Tay.
Visit the Crannog Center in Scotland
The Scottish Crannog Center is a fascinating museum exploring the lives of Iron Age peoples who lived in Scotland more than 2,500 years ago.
Sadly, the reconstructed crannog (an ancient dwelling built on stilts in the water) burned down in 2021, but the museum is rebuilding a larger Iron Age village. You can now visit again!

Killeen and the surrounding area are known for their excellent fishing opportunities. Loch Tay is especially good for trout and salmon fishing, while Killeen’s Dochart River is great for fly fishing.
Explore Glen Lyon
Glen Lyon is a stunning gorge (narrow valley) often referred to as Scotland’s “longest, loneliest and loveliest” gorge. It is home to several historic sites, including the ruins of St Mary’s Church and the ancient standing stones of Carnbaan.
How to Get to Killeen
If you look at a map, Killeen is between Glencoe and Pitlochry, a little further south. In reality, each location takes about an hour, so if you want to drive further from there to visit any of these locations, you can.
As you can also imagine, it’s very easy to get here from Glasgow and Edinburgh.

From Edinburgh: Travel north on the M90 to Perth, then north on the A9 to Stirling. From Stirling, follow the A84 west towards Callander, then follow signs for Killeen. The journey takes approximately 2 hours and covers approximately 83 miles.
From Glasgow: Travel north on the M80 to Stirling, then north on the A84 to Callander. From Callander, follow signs for Killin. The journey takes approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes and covers approximately 66 miles.

From Edinburgh: Take the train from Edinburgh Waverley Station to Stirling, then change to the bus from Stirling Bus Station to Killin. Alternatively, you can take a direct bus from Edinburgh Bus Station to Killeen. The journey takes approximately 3 hours.
From Glasgow: Take the train from Glasgow Queen Street Station to Stirling, then change to the bus from Stirling bus station to Killin. Alternatively, you can take a direct bus from Glasgow Bus Station to Killeen. The journey takes approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes.

Best time to visit Killeen
The best time to visit Killeen depends on what you’re looking for. I have been there both in spring and fall. Here’s a breakdown of what you can expect throughout the year:
Spring (March to May): Spring in Killeen is mild and wet with average temperatures between 5-10°C (41-50°F).
Summer (June to August): This is the peak tourist season in Killeen. The weather is generally mild and pleasant, with average temperatures between 15-20°C (59-68°F).
Longer days and warmer weather make it an ideal time for outdoor activities like hiking, fishing and kayaking.
However, this is also the busiest time of year, so be prepared for crowds and higher prices.
Autumn (September-November): Autumn in Keeling is usually mild with average temperatures between 10-15°C (50-59°F).
The changing colors of the foliage and the peaceful atmosphere make it a great time for hiking and exploring the local countryside.
Prices and crowds tend to dwindle after summer.
Winter (December to February): Winters in Keeling are cold and snowy, with temperatures averaging between 0-5°C (32-41°F).
Blooming wildflowers and the return of migratory birds bring the area to life
Prices and crowds tend to be lower than in summer.
However, the area’s natural beauty is especially stunning when it’s covered in snow, and places like Glencoe offer winter sports like skiing and snowboarding.
Note that some attractions may be closed during winter.
Overall, the best time to visit Killin is largely a matter of personal preference, depending on what you want to do and see.
If you like warm weather and don’t mind crowds, summer is a great time to visit. If you’re looking for a quieter time to explore the countryside, fall and spring are great options.
If snowy landscapes are your thing, winter can be a magical time to visit if you’re lucky it snows!

Killin is such a lovely Scottish village, I definitely recommend getting off the beaten track to see it. Easily accessible from many popular places. At the very least, it’s a nice lunch stop, but if you can, stay and soak up the calm vibe for a while!
