But sometimes I just want a classic chicken salad… this Is The Best Chicken Salad Recipe For that reason! It’s the perfect balance of savory chicken, sweet grapes, crisp celery and pecans, and a creamy sauce that brings it all together.

Chicken Salad Ingredients and Substitutions

- cooked chicken – I use Instant Pot Shredded Chicken The most common is this recipe.If you don’t have time to make it, take a shortcut and use a store-bought rotisserie chicken, or shred the rest Grilled Chicken Breast Or whatever poached chicken you have on hand. To easily shred chicken, use a stand mixer with the paddle attachment or a hand mixer with a whisk for 5-10 seconds.
- red grapes -Using grapes in chicken salad adds sweetness that contrasts with the saltiness. Cut them in half or leave them whole. You can also use green or black grapes, or try apple chunks, pomegranate seeds, dried cranberries (which I do) Unsweetened Dried Cranberries), or raisins, for sweetness and tangy flavor.
- celery – The crunchy texture pairs perfectly with the creaminess of the salad. chop it up. If you don’t like it, diced pickles are also good.
- fresh dill – I just made a super easy chicken salad recipe with chopped fresh dill, but you can add other fresh herbs like parsley or thyme.
- onion – I like the color and taste of the scallions here. You can use white or red onions for a spicier flavor, yellow onions for a sweeter flavor, or shallots.
- walnut – for more brevity, but you can omit them if you want. You can also try other nuts, such as walnuts, almonds or cashews, or use sunflower seeds for a nut-free option.
- mayonnaise – Use your favorite store-bought mayonnaise, or make for 5 minutes homemade mayonnaise. I think mayonnaise is the best recipe for chicken salad, but if you prefer a tangier dressing, plain Greek yogurt is an easy substitute, or you can substitute sour cream for half of the mayonnaise.
- dijon mustard – Feel free to use yellow mustard instead.
- lemon juice – Adds flavor to dressings.Fresh is always best, but bottled lemon juice Works great.
- sea salt & Black pepper

How to Make Chicken Salad
- Combine chicken salad ingredients. In a large bowl, combine chicken, grapes, celery, dill, scallions, and pecans.
- Make the dressing. In a small bowl, whisk together mayonnaise, mustard, lemon juice, salt, and pepper.

Can You Freeze Chicken Salad?
No, freezing chicken salad recipes is not recommended because the mayonnaise dressing will runny and separate after thawing, and the texture of the grapes will be different. However, if you don’t mind a bad taste, it’s safe to freeze chicken salad for up to 3 months.
