How to Roast Peppers: An easy guide to perfect roasted peppers in just a few steps! Learn how to roast peppers in the oven, gas range, or grill.

Easy Roasted Bell Peppers

Roasted peppers add a palpable flavor to any recipe that uses them. But, did you know how easy it is to make them at home instead of buying a can of peppers at the store? It’s easier than you think!

There are a few different ways to roast red peppers, but they’re all simple. Store finished chili in the refrigerator or freezer for ready-to-use recipes!

Required raw materials

  • black pepper: While our photos feature red bell peppers, you can apply this method to just about any pepper you can think of! Poblano peppers are another chili that is great for roasting.
  • Oil: Extra virgin olive oil helps to roast the peppers perfectly.

How to Roast Peppers in the Oven

Making your own roasted bell peppers couldn’t be easier. You can be ready in just 10 minutes. The rest of the time is cooking/steaming!

  1. bake: Place the peppers on a baking sheet and place in the oven, with the grill set to 500°F. Fry on all sides until the skins are blackened and the peppers are tender.
  2. steam: Transfer peppers to a heatproof container and cover. Let them steam for 20 minutes or until the peppers are no longer too hot to handle.
  3. Remove the rind and store: Carefully peel the charred skins of the peppers and remove the stems and seeds. Serve whole or cut into pieces and serve or store.

Now that you know the basic steps of how to roast peppers, let’s talk about other ways you can roast peppers!

  • Broiler: This is our preferred method. It’s mostly hands-off, aside from flipping the peppers occasionally. Simply place the peppers on a baking sheet under the roasting pan and turn them every 5 minutes until well cooked.
  • gas stove: Place the pepper directly on the stove top of the gas range and let it char on all sides. Be sure to keep an eye on the pepper as it sits directly on top of the flame. You can only do one item at a time.
  • Grill or griddle: Heat a grill or griddle and cook the peppers on top. This method doesn’t burn the peppers like the other two methods, which means less flavor. Depending on the size of your grill or pan, you may not be able to handle all the peppers at once.

Should peppers be chopped before roasting?

No! This method uses whole peppers (bell pepper or otherwise) to create delicious roasted peppers.

Now, once the peppers are roasted and the skins removed, you can keep them whole or diced for storage.

What temperature should the peppers be roasted at?

In the first step, the peppers are charred at 500°F. The high heat adds a rich, smoky flavor and caramelizes the pepper skins.

When the charring step is complete, place the peppers in a covered heatproof dish. The heat from the charred peppers inside completes the cooking process.

How to Peel Peppers

There aren’t really any major tricks involved in this part of the process. If the peppers are roasted and steamed properly, the charred skins should immediately fall off, revealing the beautiful roasted red peppers underneath.

One suggestion I have is not to pay too much attention to some of the skins stuck to the peppers. It’s okay if there’s a little bit left. This is partly responsible for its smoky flavor.

Tips and Notes

  • Don’t skip steaming. This completes the cooking process and allows the peppers to cool sufficiently so that you can easily peel off the skin.
  • Do not wash with water after steaming. One might be tempted to rinse the peppers in water to help with peeling. Do not do this! It washes away all the goodness.
  • Cool completely before storing. Chili should be cooled completely before storing in jars.

There are many ways to use roasted red peppers, but here are some of our favorite recipes that include this delicious ingredient:

Roasted peppers can be whole or diced and stored in jars in the refrigerator for 7-10 days. To prolong their freshness, I recommend adding a little olive oil. You can also cover them completely with olive oil to create an airtight seal.

For long-term storage, freeze them in small jars or bags, removing as much air as possible. When you’re ready to use them, just thaw them in the refrigerator overnight.

  • 6 bell pepper wash and dry
  • Extra virgin olive oil
  • Preheat rotisserie chicken to 500°F.

  • Place peppers on a baking sheet. Char the peppers on all sides by placing them under the broiler until the skins are blackened in most parts of the peppers and the peppers are tender.

  • Place the peppers in a heatproof bowl, cover (cover, plastic wrap, or kitchen towel) and let the peppers steam for about 20 minutes, until the peppers are no longer too hot to handle.

  • Remove the charred skins from the peppers and discard. Remove stems and seeds and discard.

  • Either dice the peppers or put them whole in the jar.

  • Chili can be used immediately or saved for later. To store peppers, place them in a jar with olive oil and pepper liquid. Let it cool completely, then store it in the refrigerator for about 7-10 days.
