What is tahini?
Tahini is creamy the mediterranean or middle East A sauce made with ground sesame seeds and a common pantry staple. The taste is somewhat similar to hummus. The texture of tahini itself is like a nut butter, but tahini is thinner and used to drizzle over vegetables, salads, meats, and more.
Ingredients and Substitutes
This section explains how to choose the best ingredients for homemade tahini, the role each ingredient plays in the recipe, and substitution options. For measurements, see recipe card below.
- sesame paste – Sometimes simply called tahini, this is simply ground sesame seeds to make a seed butter, similar to the way almonds are ground to make almond butter. It’s a key ingredient in tahini (and a key ingredient in hummus).
Variation: Make your own tahini!
I usually buy tahini (this is my favorite brand), but you can also make your own with sesame seeds. Simply pulse sesame seeds (raw or toasted) in a food processor for about 5 minutes until a smooth tahini (sesame paste) forms. If it is too thick, you can add a little sesame oil.
- garlic – Fresh garlic cloves make this sauce taste best, but you can use 1 tsp canned garlic instead. 1/4 teaspoon of garlic powder also works in a pinch, but is less ideal.
- Extra virgin olive oil – You can also try a neutral oil like sesame oil or avocado oil.
- water – Thin the sauce.
- lemon juice – Adds a tangy flavor.Fresh lemon juice tastes best, but I sometimes use bottled lemon juice For convenience. You can also use lime juice for a different flavor.
- spices – combination of ground Cumin, smoked paprikaSea Salt And Black Pepper.

This section shows how to make a basic tahini, with step-by-step photos and details about the technique to help you visualize it.For full instructions, including amounts and temperatures, see recipe card below.
- Mix the ingredients. Combine tahini, garlic, olive oil, water, lemon juice, and spices in a container blender or a food processor. Puree until smooth.
- Dilute as needed. Add more water, a tablespoon at a time, until the tahini is your desired consistency.
Tip: Adjust the thickness according to your usage.
Thicken it if you plan to use it as a dip, or add water to thin it out if you plan to use it as a dressing or sauce.

This is a basic lemon garlic tahini recipe, but you can also customize it for different flavors. Try these variations:

- Sweet – Add a tablespoon of maple syrup or honey for a hint of sweetness. You can also use Zero Sugar Maple Syrup or Zero Sugar Honey for this!
- yogurt – Add 1/2 cup plain Greek yogurt. Any of the fresh herbs mentioned above would also work well with the tahini yogurt dressing.
