Ingredients and Substitutions
This section explains how to choose the best ingredients for baking turkey wings in the oven, what each ingredient does in the recipe, and substitution options. For measurements see Recipe card below.
- whole turkey wings – Look for fresh, medium-sized whole turkey wings, about 5 pounds total. If your store doesn’t carry them, you can usually find them at your local butcher’s shop during the fall and winter. If you have detached winglets or snares, these will work too.You can also make it with this recipe whole chicken wingsbut the cooking time will be faster.
- olive oil – Adds flavor, locks in moisture, promotes browning, and helps seasonings stick. Avocado oil or any neutral cooking oil will also work.
- seasoning – This baked turkey wings recipe is extra delicious with a homemade flavor poultry seasoning and Cajun seasoning (takes 5 minutes each!), but store-bought ones will work too. You will also need sea salt.
- onion – When cut into large pieces, they act as a “shelf” (for the wings) while adding flavor.I used yellow onions but you can substitute white or red onions or omit them and just use one Comes with baking pan.
- chicken soup -The broth in the bottom of the pan will help keep the wings moist while baking.I use low sodium chicken brothbut you can use regular chicken stock, or make bone brothalso.
Variations: Use simpler seasonings.
If you don’t like the bold flavors of Cajun and poultry seasonings, you can simply season your turkey wings with individual spices.A great combination is dried rosemary and thyme (or italian seasoning), garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt and pepper.
