Easy Instant Pot Sticky Rice

Have you ever wondered how to make sticky rice at home? Well, now you don't have to!

This recipe is a super easy way to make perfect sticky rice in just a few minutes of prep.It is made from only 4 ingredients, all mixed in instant pot Then cook until completely fluffy, sticky and delicious.

This sticky rice is the perfect side dish or paired with your favorite rice bowl.

What is glutinous rice?

Sticky rice is a popular classic dish in Thai cuisine, but is popular throughout Asia and beyond. Traditionally, it is made by soaking rice in water and steaming it.

This sticky rice recipe instant pot This is my version of the traditional dish! It's faster and easier and can be made using several different rice varieties.

Required raw materials

  • water: This recipe calls for 2 1/2 cups of water.
  • rice: I used sushi rice for this recipe because I usually use that as my base Sushi poke bowl! You can also use other types of rice, although the texture will be different. See alternatives below!
  • Rice vinegar: Look for unflavored rice vinegar; not flavored. Seasoned rice vinegar contains more additives and is sweeter than unflavored rice vinegar.
  • Salt: Add just the right amount of flavor to finish the rice.

How to cook glutinous rice

  1. Washing rice: Place the rice in the strainer and rinse until the water is clear.
  2. Combine and cook: Place the washed rice into the Instant Pot and add the water, salt and vinegar. Stir to combine, secure lid, and set valve to seal. Cook manually for 9 minutes.
  3. Finish and serve: Once the rice is cooked, quickly release, stir, and serve as desired.

Alternative: Stovetop

  1. Rinse the rice until the water runs clear, then place it in a medium saucepan with 2 1/2 cups water.
  2. Cover the pot and bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Once boiling, remove lid, reduce heat to medium-low, and cook until water is absorbed (about 20 minutes).
  3. Remove the pot from the heat, cover with rice and let sit for about 10 minutes.
  4. In a small bowl, stir together rice vinegar and salt until salt dissolves. After the rice has steamed for 10 minutes, remove the lid and fluff it with a fork. Transfer the glutinous rice to a bowl and pour in the rice vinegar mixture. Mix carefully and serve as desired.

What kind of rice is best for glutinous rice?

I recommend a variety of short-grain white rice for this recipe. Short-grain rice tends to have a higher starch content, which contributes to the overall “stickiness” of the finished rice.

I usually use sushi rice, but you can use classic glutinous rice (also called mochi), arborio rice, or carnoroli rice for this recipe.

No matter what variety of rice you choose, I recommend buying organic rice and rinsing it well until the water runs clear. This helps remove any dirt and grime and creates the best texture! Some rice may need to be rinsed and soaked.

Tips and Notes

  • Serve immediately. This rice will harden as it cools, so the sooner you eat it, the better.
  • If you don't serve immediately, Be sure to keep the rice warm. You can leave it in the bowl and cover the bowl with a towel to keep it warm and moist.

Food recommendations

This sticky rice recipe is the perfect accompaniment to many of your favorite foods! Here are some of my favorite ways to serve:

How to store

Sticky rice is best enjoyed immediately! However, if you do have leftovers, you can store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 4-5 days.

To reheat, place the rice in a microwave-safe bowl, moisten with a little water, cover with a damp paper towel, and microwave in 30-second intervals until heated through.
