As my upcoming eye surgery looms, I’m also starting to think more about my dog’s vision.
The problem is, I didn’t know I had strabismus until I was about 25 years old. Before that, I probably had mild double vision, which made me feel tired and inattentive throughout my childhood. It wasn’t until I started driving on the highways and long distances more often that I realized something was wrong.
Since then, I have worn glasses with prisms to correct my double vision. I didn’t know I had double vision, and my previous eye doctor never noticed it.
In addition to double vision which I hope to correct, I have severe nearsightedness. There’s no doubt about it, if I wasn’t wearing glasses or contacts I couldn’t see beyond the five inches in front of my face.
As for our dogs, they can’t tell us that their world is blurry.
Of course, they don’t need to study, go to work, or drive. So if they have a slight visual impairment, it doesn’t matter too much.

At night, she ran excitedly towards rocks, leaves, and didn’t realize until she got to them that they weren’t actually frogs.
She also tends to bark at family members entering the front door longer than Matilda does before she recognizes them.
These are occasional occurrences that don’t cause me much concern in day-to-day life.

As for people, every elderly person I know and love has started using reading glasses. This is also due to age-related changes in the lens of the eye.

In fact, I asked my ophthalmologist how they prescribe glasses for babies who can’t express which letters they can read on a chart. Doctors say they do this by dilating the pupil with eye drops and shining light into the eye.
So for dogs with real vision problems, a visual assessment can likely tell the veterinarian a lot about how your dog sees the world.
Dogs don’t usually wear glasses for obvious reasons, but there are surgical options as well as hard contact lenses for treatable eye problems.
Of course, some dogs are mostly or completely blind and rely solely on their primary sense, smell, to navigate the world around them.
For blind dogs, there’s an invention called “Muffin’s Halo,” which works like a cane for the blind. It’s a harness with a plastic “halo” attached to the dog’s head so the dog gets feedback when it bumps into something or someone. I have seen firsthand that a puppy bumping into your lap, then happily changing direction and continuing on their path is truly the cutest thing in the world.

While it’s normal for dogs to have slightly poor eyesight, keep in mind that if they keep bumping into things, can’t find you, or get lost in the house, there could be more than that. As our dogs age they can develop lens sclerosis, but they can also develop canine cognitive dementia, cataracts, glaucoma and other issues – so don’t hesitate to ask Ask your veterinarian.
