10 Minute Hot Crab Dip Tortilla Crust

This easy grilled crab dip recipe uses lump crabmeat and is infused with scallions, jalapeños, lime juice and smoked paprika. It has amazing Southwestern flavor and the creamy base doesn’t contain cream cheese, so it can be adjusted to be dairy-free or mayonnaise-free (for the haters! Instead of bread crumbs, this dip uses grated Crushed tortilla chips to form a naturally gluten-free crust.

I'm a big fan of high and low dishes (after all, Ina Garten got me hooked on the magic of chips and caviar in my youth). But I've always thought that hot crab dip seemed like a silly use of $30 a pound of protein. It’s the same philosophical problem I have with foie gras on a burger and lobster on a taco. I admit that I do enjoy eating these things at restaurants from time to time, but at home, I don't hide my splurges beneath ketchup, cream cheese, or sour cream.

One of the ways I stretch crab meat while maintaining its integrity is by making Crab Cakes Baked Potatoes my recipes Cabiwo. I recently made this recipe and used only half a pound of crab meat. For the rest, I think I can finally put my spin on the Grilled Hot Crab Dip, it was worth every bite.

A few weeks ago, I had friends over for dinner—friends who had invited me to wine and dinner many times, but I had yet to reciprocate. So I wanted to do something special for them. It was a nightmare for me to stand on the stove frying crab cakes while everyone else was drinking roses and watching the sunset. The next thing that came to my mind was the idea of making spicy crab dip with jalapenos and scallions. Like the smell of caviar scooped onto Cape Cod chips, I can't get rid of it.

Ingredients for hot crab sauce

This super easy hot crab dip uses a few tablespoons of crème fraîche and mayonnaise (instead of cream cheese) for a creamy base. But you'll be surprised to know that the flavor of the fresh, sweet crab meat is still the star. To make it dairy-free, simply replace the plant-based sour cream or yogurt with any white condiment. If you are looking for Creamy Cheese Crab Dip, I recommend using the same base as this smoked salmon dip. Tastes just as good with crab.

inspired by this Gluten Free Mac and Cheese, I spiced up the mixture with some diced jalapeños and sautéed scallions. Lime juice gives it an extra Southwestern flavor, as well as chili powder instead of classic Old Bay Maryland.

Grilled Crab Sauce Step by Step

To make the Quick Hot Crab Sauce gluten-free while still maintaining that crunchy topping that all the best baking sauces have, I ground up some tortilla chips and used them to spread over the casserole. This is the perfect use of scraps from those tortilla bags sitting in the back of the pantry.

The whole process only takes a few minutes under the broiler to turn golden brown. If you like your sauce hotter, bake in the oven for a few more minutes at 350 degrees Fahrenheit. But I loved that the brief heat brought out the flavor of the sea without melting the crab into mush.
