Governor of New York State Andrew Cuomo In July Declaring gun violence is Disaster emergency in the state. Cuomo even said that guns have caused more deaths in New York than COVID-19.
“We spread from one epidemic to another,” Cuomo said. “We went from the COVID to the gun violence epidemic and the fear and death that followed. When you look at the recent numbers, the situation is very bad. More people die from gun violence than from COVID.”
Cuomo outlined seven points he hopes to solve in curbing gun violence: treat gun violence as an urgent public health problem; use data and science to target hot spots; actively contact young people at risk, break the cycle of escalation of violence, and let illegal guns be used. Stay away from the streets, keep guns away from dangerous people, and rebuild the relationship between the police and the community.
