I know you’ve been told by Travel + Leisure and Afar Magazine that Positano is the best home base for exploring the Amalfi Coast but the prices are crazy and it’s extremely overcrowded.

It can be extremely difficult trying to decide where to stay on Amalfi Coast and my Amalfi Coast guide will help you find the best boutique hotels on the coast.
I will take all of the guesswork out where to stay and which towns have the best hotels on the coast.
If you want a 5-star luxury Amalfi Coast vacation without the price tag and crowds of some of the more famous towns I suggest you should make Praiano your home base while exploring the Amalfi Coast.
After spending four days in Florence and two days in Rome we made our way to the Amalfi Coast and bypassed Positano and made Praiano our home base.
While Positano is popular for its central location, restaurants, and stunning natural beauty. Peak season can be crowded and I am not paying damn near $1500 a night for an outdated hotel room.
Most of the hotels in Italy are not styled with contemporary decor which is what I look for when booking a hotel room. While I cover hotels throughout the entire these are the top towns where most visitors stay while visiting Amalfi.

How to Get to the Amalfi Coast
Private Car To/From Positano. The complimentary private car back and forth to Positano was the icing on the cake while we did rent a car so we could venture out on our own it was good to know we had this option available for us.
There is a public bus that runs on the Amalfi Coast Highway, but people were packed on those buses like sardines and that did not look appealing to me.
Things to Know Before Booking:
Distance From Positano. After spending the day walking around Pompeii, we really appreciated coming back to the tranquil and peaceful Praiano.
I don’t feel like we missed out on anything by not staying in Positano, in fact, it felt like we had the best of both worlds. Praiano is by far the best town to stay in on the Amalfi Coast.
What Not to Miss in Praiano
- Like Positano, Praiano also features pretty colored houses, a maze of little lanes, and flights of steep steps.
- Look out for the majolica-tiled votive shrines dotted around the town.
- The first thing you’ll want to do is go for a swim as the sea is irresistible. There are several small beaches, some sandy, some pebbly, all of which are much quieter than those at Positano.
- The next big attraction here is the Grotta dello Smeraldo, a natural feature a couple of miles from the town.
- There are several lovely churches in the town, including the Church of San Luca Evangelista with a beautiful majolica floor. The Church of San Gennaro, the Church of Santa Maria a Castro, and the Convent of San Domenico are high above the town and with breathtaking views.
- It’s worth spending a day in Positano (four miles to the west) to explore the cute little stairways and passageways between the steeply raked buildings.
- And then it’s only a couple of miles or so in the other direction to Amalfi town – with its Duomo, paper museum, and splendid piazza and seafront.
- Make sure you’re back in Praiano for sunset, the most spectacular along this coast.

The Ristorante La Caravella in Amalfi has hosted artists like Warhol, Duchamp and La Dolce Vita director Federico Fellini. This historic part restaurant part museum has a Michelin star and has been a favorite of gourmets since the early 1960s. The Dipino family oversees the menu which changes seasonally with a wine list to match the cuisine. They offer three tasting menus featuring local ingredients with dishes like potato croquettes with provolone and a colatura sauce and squid ink ravioli stuffed with breadcrumbs and lobster.

When To Visit The Amalfi Coast
Like most European countries, Italy is extremely hot in summer and cold in winter – particularly in the north where glamorous alpine ski resorts buzz from November to March.
For the rest of the year, the climate is ideal for floating on the Mediterranean, fine dining, private hillside concerts, exclusive boutiques or just lying by the pool sipping on Limoncello.
If you’re having trouble deciding where to stay on the Amalfi Coast remember the views will be amazing, the food will be delicious and you will be able to drink limoncello no matter the time of day.
Spring (Easter thru May) On The Amalfi Coast
Spring on the Amalfi Coast is amazing as the sleepy villages come to life after their winter hibernation. The tourist season officially begins at Easter and runs through the month of September the prices are generally cheaper in May and June.
July and August On The Amalfi Coast
If you visit the coast during the summer months of July and August there are plenty of local festivals that take place on the coast during the months of July and August.
Because July and August are the busiest months to visit the coast remember prices will be high and the crowds will be crazy so be prepared.
If you visit the coast during the high season I suggest hiring a private boat to explore the hidden coves and beaches along the Amalfi Coast or hiking the trails along the mountain slopes above the coast, far from the tourist crush.
September On The Amalfi Coast
The month of September is also a great time to visit the Amalfi Coast because the temperatures are mild and most of the tourists have returned home.
Winter (Nov to Easter) On The Amalfi Coast
The coast shuts down and practically becomes a ghost town in the winter as most of the cafés and restaurants will be closed and will not reopen till spring.
