20+ Delicious and Easy Detox Recipes (Soups, Smoothies & More)

People tend to be very interested in the concept of detox. They buy expensive powders, supplements, juice cleansers and regimens. But the reality is, your liver doesn’t need you to provide anything to detoxify other than to get your way out of the way.

The best way to avoid the worst while supporting your body’s natural way of detoxing is through food.

What are the best detox recipes?

Three things should be considered in any detox diet: avoiding insults, adding nutrients, and making food as digestible as possible.

Let’s quickly explore each aspect, or if you’re impatient, you can skip right to the detox recipes below.

1. Avoid insults.

The top three hazards to the liver (besides environmental chemicals) are sugar, caffeine, and alcohol. That’s why detox drinks are often low in sugar and caffeine.Here’s a list if you need ideas Decaffeinated Coffee Alternatives.

Unfortunately, switching to natural sweeteners doesn’t always help with liver detoxification, as the problem is fructose, which is high in agave and some types of honey. Of course, the situation is much worse with high fructose corn syrup, which is why the added sugars in carbonated beverages and packaged foods are really a burden on the liver, which is the only organ that metabolizes fructose.

Fructose is also naturally found in fruit, which is why we always want to eat whole fruit instead of using juice cleansers to detox. It’s actually a fructose bomb for your liver! The detox smoothie recipes below focus only on fruit and add plenty of fiber.

Finally, the rule of thumb is to avoid white and beige foods during your detox: bleached flour, refined grains, and dairy. Choose brown rice instead of white rice, and sweet potatoes instead of regular potatoes. Fill your plate with the most colorful plants you can find. This also makes me…

2. Add nutrition.

The best detox recipes focus on anti-inflammatory foods.

A good tip for identifying anti-inflammatory foods is to simply eat color, which is a good indicator of the antioxidant content of a food. The more diverse the colors on the plate, the more nutrients.

Some liver favorites are bitter cruciferous vegetables and herbs: beets, cilantro, parsley, broccoli, kale, cabbage, and dandelion root. That’s why most of the detox recipes you’ll find below are plant-based and contain many different plants.

However, for many people with IBS or SIBO, raw or woody vegetables can be difficult to digest. This is also a very important thing to consider when choosing a detox recipe.

3. Aids digestion.

If half of your food ends up in whole pieces in the toilet, it doesn’t matter how many nutrients are in your meal. Your body isn’t processing it properly or getting a reward.

That’s why detox recipes need to find a happy medium between preventing the liver from processing glucose and fructose spikes and making sure the digestive system doesn’t have to work overtime to process what you’re bringing into your plants.

In general, the more fiber in a food or meal, the more work your body has to do to break it down, and the less likely you are to experience a glucose spike. This is why people often recommend eating whole apples instead of mixing them into smoothies.

Breaking down plants into puree means fructose and other nutrients are absorbed more quickly. But it also means that if your digestive system is in trouble or stagnant, it will be easier for you to absorb these nutrients.

As you can see, this is an exquisite tango.

But for ease of digestion, I’m a big fan of detox smoothie recipes and detox soups that break down veggies for you. They’re still much better at fiber than juice, which removes fiber all together.

Warm foods like soups and stews have the added benefit of being easier to digest, whether they’re pureed or not. Cold food slows down the digestive process, while hot food tends to be easier to digest in the gastrointestinal tract.

Fresh ginger and spices like turmeric, coriander, fennel seeds, and cumin can also act as therapeutic digestive aids.

Finally, some methods, like this Ayurvedic kitchari recipes, focuses on a single nutrient, so your digestive system only has to focus on one task instead of switching between the enzymes it needs to process animal proteins, starches and fats. Some people call this method food bonding.

The detox recipes below tend to be plant-based or paleo and exclude animal protein and starches.
