Pharmacy benefit managers have been in the news a lot lately Because they are an important part of the ongoing drug price debate in the country. Mergers, legislation and lawsuits have flooded the industry.
in the upcoming INVEST Digital Health Conference in Dallas Scheduled for September 28, in partnership with healthy wild cat, a panel discussion about the future of pharmacy benefit managers will be part of a larger conversation about employee benefits. One of the panelists for this discussion was AJ Loiacono, capital receipt CEO. In response to email questions, he shared three things he’s doing to reform pharmacy benefit management:
Create a public register of “net” drug pricesso consumers and employers will never take advantage of drug pricing barriers.
Eliminate drug price gaps
No one should make money by raising drug prices, especially in a system where prices are already an illusion (see point 1)
Eliminate ability for brokers and advisors to pay through carriers, PBMs and other point solutions
No one should get paid for recommending a health product, it creates a terrible conflict of interest. Any consulting fees or PBM business expenses should be reasonable, fully disclosed, and paid by the payer in a separate bill (Employer Group)
