Two years after the COVID-19 pandemic, the situation in the United States has shown clear signs of improvement. While the Omicron wave has brought about a big spike in cases, the number of cases has dropped rapidly since peaking in mid-January, with the latest variant having less of an impact.
In light of these changes, Washington and other states have begun to ease remaining public health restrictions.
The accelerated process of developing, testing, manufacturing and distributing vaccines has given more than 250 million Americans access to at least one dose of the vaccine since it was first introduced. With greater protection, the risk of COVID to a large portion of the population has been greatly reduced. During the recent wave of Omicron, vaccinated people had far lower hospitalization and mortality rates than unvaccinated people.
Public health leaders have struggled to overcome skepticism and resistance to a COVID-19 vaccine, but about a quarter of the overall U.S. population remains unvaccinated.
Much of the hesitation stems from concerns about the vaccine itself. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 51.3% of unvaccinated people expressed concern about possible side effects, and 45.6% expressed distrust of the COVID-19 vaccine.
A recent study by ChamberOfCommerce.org found that as of the first week of February 2022, 11.5% of Washington residents were unvaccinated. Among the unvaccinated population in Washington, 36 percent said government distrust was one reason for not vaccinating or planning to get vaccinated.
