  • One month has passed since the Florida building collapsed.
  • The rescue team ended the search on Friday, and one victim is still missing.
  • Although the exact cause of the collapse is not yet known, preliminary findings indicate that some of the structure of the building appears to have degraded.

The search for victims of the collapse of an apartment building in Florida a month ago is coming to an end. The rescue team has stopped working at the disaster site that killed at least 97 people.

Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said on Twitter on Saturday: “It’s hard to believe that a month may have passed since the biggest tragedy in the history of our community.”

She added in a video posted on social media: “Although the collapsed location is limited to only one block in a closely connected city, its impact has far exceeded our county and touched the lives of the whole world. .”.

Rescuers ended their search and rescue operation at the Champlain Towers South site on Friday, a 12-story waterfront building that partially collapsed on the night of June 24.

Except for a teenager who was rescued in the first few hours after the collapse, rescuers failed to rescue any residents of the building who had not escaped, and announced on July 7 that they had given up searching for survivors.

After removing thousands of tons of rubble, only a few foundation walls remain for the building north of Miami Beach.

Levin Kava said this week that the authorities have confirmed 97 bodies, but believe that one victim is still missing.

The Miami-Dade police continued to search for the 98th victim at the site where the wreckage piled up.

Although the exact cause of the collapse is not yet known, preliminary findings indicate that some of the structure of the building appears to have degraded.

On July 4, the rest of the building was demolished in a controlled explosion in order to continue recovery operations.

Officials said last week that a memorial to the victims may be built at the disaster site.
