British Prime Minister Boris Johnson called for caution on Tuesday after the number of coronavirus cases registered in the UK fell by nearly a week, which surprised officials and experts.
The infection rate recorded in the UK has fallen for six consecutive days, with 24,950 new cases announced on Monday, compared with 46,558 cases last Tuesday, a 46% drop.
A reversal after weeks of rising interest rates coincided with the abolition of almost all epidemic regulations in England on July 19, including the legal requirement to wear masks to maintain social distancing in indoor public places.
This confuses the government and scientists, who have previously warned that in the next few weeks after the restrictions are relaxed, the number of cases may surge to 100,000 per day.
Although there was a turnaround after the summer school holidays began, ministers warned that the long-term situation remains uncertain.

Johnson said during a visit to a police station in southeastern England: “I noticed that obviously we have some better numbers for six days, but it is very, very important that we do not allow ourselves to draw conclusions on this prematurely.”
“People have to be very cautious, this is still the government’s approach,” he added.
Johnson ended his 10-day self-isolation later on Monday after close contact with Health Minister Sajid Javid, who tested positive for Covid-19 earlier this month.
The Prime Minister argued that Britain’s successful vaccination campaign-which has vaccinated 70% of adults-allowed the relaxation of legal restrictions last week.
But this move has aroused widespread criticism. People worry that even though the number of deaths from the new crown virus has dropped a lot, the national health service may again face severe pressure due to the increase in cases.
Experts have been trying to explain why the number of infections seems to have fallen sharply since the beginning of last week.
The end of the 2020 European Cup football championship-blamed on the surge in cases where young people gather to watch the game-as well as school holidays and heat waves are all considered factors.
Stephen Griffin of the University of Leeds School of Medicine said: “The recent decline in cases in England is good news, but considering that the restrictions have been gradually relaxed, this is also puzzling.”
However, in response to Johnson’s call for caution, he added: “I would be surprised if we might see this downward trend continue.”
