More than a year ago, Google Cloud and Mayo Clinic reached a 10-year strategic partnership. The goal of establishing an “assembly line” of clinical artificial intelligence toolsTo support this, they need to have comprehensive and standardized data sets-which is rare in the healthcare sector.
However, the process of aggregating healthcare data and bringing it to the cloud is very time-consuming, even for the Mayo Clinic, which has more technical resources than most companies. Part of the challenge is that engineers need to evaluate different options for cloud configuration, including network and security best practices.
Through cooperation with Mayo Clinic, Google Cloud is building its healthcare data engine, a cloud-based tool for healthcare companies to aggregate and standardize data from medical records, insurance claims, clinical trials, and research.
Marianne Slight, project manager of Google Cloud Healthcare Analytics, said: “We have integrated the lessons learned around this configuration, as well as our lessons from other large organizations, such as (Mayo) organizations that bring protected health information to the cloud. “In the video interview.
The platform aims to make it easier for the health system to obtain real-time information to identify high-risk patients, allocate resources, and other key decisions. Prior to this, most health systems used clinical data warehouses to manually aggregate data, which may be more difficult to scale and keep up to date.
Knowing the type and format of data sources that Mayo Clinic wants to use helps Google focus on the content to be built. As a cloud provider, Slight emphasized that Google Cloud cannot view customer health data or train models based on that data.
Mayo Clinic vice president of information technology Jim Buntrock said in a press release that the medical system has been “hit a wall” because of its ability to innovate using on-premise software.
“This has many applications. For example, building a’head-up display’ for the ICU-at critical moments-helps the nursing team focus their attention when and where they need it most,” he said. “From creating better ways to care for patients remotely after they leave the hospital, to making it easier for patients to interact with us through mobile apps, we are working with Google Cloud to build a platform for healthcare transformation.”
The healthcare data engine is currently available as a pilot. Some of Google’s customers want to use it to run projects related to population health and care transitions. Slight said another project focused on health equity — specifically ensuring that all patients are followed up for screening.
Indiana University Health Center is one of Google’s designated pilot customers and is working to use the platform to improve medical services.
Google Not the only company that solves this problemAmazon also recently launched Amazon HealthLake, its own cloud-based system to help healthcare companies store and analyze health information.
