After Publication, Three Days Grace Belongs to Its Readers

A novel in manuscript has one reader with the final word on what it means. Publishing it hands that authority to strangers, and the author has to watch them use it.

Jeremy Bradley-Silverio Donato, an American author who has lived in Paris since 2019, released Three Days Grace through Indigo River Publishing on 12 May 2026, with distribution by Simon & Schuster. The book has been in other people’s hands ever since, and he describes the change in blunt terms.

“You spend years alone with a book and then, almost overnight, it belongs to other people.”

The novel itself is compact. Set over three days in Paris, it explores family, memory and the things people leave unsaid. But readers differ on what lies at its heart, each finding something different in the same story.

Many centres

Some readers go to the structure first. The 72-hour frame comes up again and again in responses to the book, and Kirkus Reviews framed the novel through its setting: “Family secrets, forbidden love, and past hurts collide spectacularly in the rainy streets of Paris in Bradley-Silverio Donato’s novel.”

Others go to what the characters leave unsaid. Addison Ciuchta at Independent Book Review called it “a quiet novel on trauma, loss, and the way secrets both kept and shared have long-lasting ripple effects”. The Independent Review of Books looked at the people, writing that “readers are welcomed into each of these characters’ wounds and defense mechanisms”. Still others, he has noticed, read it first as a book about family, or about identity.

On Goodreads, the novel held a 4.39 average across 116 ratings and 102 reviews as of 27 September 2026. That is a lot of separate readings for a 210-page book.

Coverage has come from different directions too. YASS Magazine ran an interview with him in April, a few weeks before publication, and QueerAF made a podcast episode in support of the book. Each outlet brought its own readership, and with it another set of expectations about what kind of novel this is.

“The most surprising thing has been seeing readers find meanings in the book that I wasn’t consciously trying to put there,” he says.

Losing the argument

For a writer, that spread can be disorienting. You work for years on a balance between elements, and then readers pull on one thread and call it the whole garment. Bradley-Silverio Donato has chosen to read the spread as a sign the book is working.

Losing control of how a book gets read can sound like a loss. Bradley-Silverio Donato counts it among the most rewarding parts of the experience. An author can argue for one reading in interviews, but readers bring their own histories to the page, and the part of a novel that lodges in someone’s memory depends on the person as much as on the text.

“Publication taught me that you don’t get to decide which part of a novel will stay with someone.”

That lesson suits a book so concerned with what people hear in one another’s silences. A reader who comes to it after years of family quiet may carry away a different scene from a reader drawn by the Paris setting, and both have read the same novel.

Prizes have followed, though they form a separate story. The book took Silver in Fiction at the 2026 Living Now Book Awards, and won the LGBTQ+ Fiction category at the 2026 American Fiction Awards. He values awards for extending a novel’s life, which brings the matter back to readers: a medal matters to him because it puts the book in front of someone new.

Each new reader arrives with a different idea of what Three Days Grace is about, and its author appears content to let them keep it.
