“We need to ensure the safety of people and help companies restart the economy.
“Perhaps most importantly, we urgently need to develop a plan for our NHS and care system to ensure that employees feel supported, invest in services, and clear the backlog of appointments.
“We must learn to coexist with the virus, but the way to do this is to allow the people of Scotland, our NHS and our economy to be supported and protected.”
Elsewhere, the Scottish Green Party has called for clarification of university rules before students return to campuses across the country in the coming weeks.
Gillian Mackay, the party’s health spokesman, said: “The Scottish government must ensure that the chaotic re-entry situation of last year will not be repeated, when thousands of students were killed by the virus. Forced to self-isolate in the student dormitory.
“It’s only a few weeks before the new semester begins. International students should have a clear understanding of the process of entering the country and settling on campus. However, the ministers cannot tell them how and where they will be isolated.
“Students must also be able to test and vaccinate conveniently on campus. Although many younger students will not be fully vaccinated, the instructions on wearing masks and keeping distance must be clear. It must also be provided to anyone who tests positive support.
“It is vital that the Chief Minister addressed these issues in a statement to Parliament on Tuesday to ensure that students are as prepared as possible for their arrival on campus.”
