Olympic decathlon champion Damian Warner was appointed as the flag bearer for the closing ceremony of the Tokyo Olympics in Canada.
With a score of 9,018 points, Warner performed well in the 10 events of the event and won the first decathlon gold medal in Canadian history.
Warner from London, Ontario is the fourth decathlete in history to exceed 9,000 points.
He broke the Olympic record of 8,893 points and the Canadian record of 8,895 points he previously set in Götzis, Austria in May this year.
Warner was also the first Canadian decathlete to win multiple Olympic medals and won a bronze medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
The only Canadian to win an Olympic medal in the decathlon is Dave Steen, who won a bronze medal at the 1988 Seoul Olympics.

Warner is the second decathlete to be awarded the Canadian flag bearer. Mike Smith held the national flag at the opening ceremony of the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games.
The women’s basketball players Miranda Aim and Nathan Hirayama of the Canadian men’s seven-a-side rugby team jointly served as flag bearers at the opening ceremony on July 19.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Tokyo Olympics were postponed for one year, and there were almost no spectators at the event.
