Several Republican politicians who opposed wearing masks and vaccinations tested positive for COVID-19.
Governor Greg Abbott, R-TX, tested positive for the new coronavirus on Tuesday. The governor’s office said in a statement that the governor has been fully vaccinated against the virus and has not shown any symptoms.
“Governor Greg Abbott tested positive for the COVID-19 virus today. The governor is testing every day and today is the first positive test result,” statement read. “The governor will be quarantined at the governor’s mansion and continue to be tested daily. Governor Abbott is receiving regeneron monoclonal antibody treatment.”
Abbott has previously issued an executive order prohibiting school districts from implementing mask requirements. Despite opposition from public health officials in the state, he also lifted COVID-19 restrictions in March, such as the requirement to wear a mask.
The Texas Republican is now the latest in a group of Republican politicians infected with the virus.
On Monday night, R-WI Senator Andre Jaque revealed that he and several family members tested positive for COVID-19 last week. He also added that he had been hospitalized with pneumonia.
“I don’t know when I contracted COVID, but after I returned home from Madison, some of my family and I tested positive last weekend,” Senator Jacque said in a text message to the committee. Milwaukee sentinel.
Jacques participated in two committee hearings on August 11, and he did not wear a mask to speak during at least one crowded hearing.
R-NC Rep. Keith Kidwell also revealed on Tuesday that he and his wife Viki had tested positive for COVID-19. In a Facebook post updated on Thursday, Kidwell called for prayers for his wife who was taken to Beaufort Hospital.
“Thursday morning. They have been able to lower her oxygen a bit. She complained about the food today, so I guess that means she is getting better. Please keep praying for her,” he posted, according to WITN.
Kidwell has always been a strong opponent of wearing masks and the COVID-19 vaccine. He had previously stated that he refused to wear a mask during the 2020 House of Representatives debate. He also initiated a bill that would prohibit D-NC Governor Roy Cooper from compulsory vaccination.
In a previous Facebook post, the North Carolina Republican also condemned the government’s vaccination campaign as “manipulation.”
