Vatican City – Pope Francis said on Wednesday that getting the coronavirus vaccine is “an act of love” as the leaders of 1.2 billion Catholics around the world have joined a campaign to increase confidence in Covid-19.
“Thank God and many people for their efforts, we now have a vaccine to protect us from Covid-19,” Francis said in a message for the “It’s Up to You” initiative for the United States.
In a video targeting communities severely affected by the virus in North, Central and South America, he said:
They give us hope of ending the pandemic, but only if everyone can use them and we work together.
“Vaccination… is an act of love,” said the 84-year-old religious leader.
“It is an act of love to make a contribution to ensuring that most people get vaccinated. Loving yourself, loving family and friends, loving everyone.”
Distrust fuel transmission
According to official data compiled by Agence France-Presse, since its outbreak in China in December 2019, Covid-19 has caused at least 4,370,427 deaths.
Despite the large-scale vaccine campaign, conspiracy theories and distrust of the government or drugs are contributing to the spread of the virus.
In the United States, the country most affected by Covid-19 deaths, the vast majority of new deaths and severe cases have not been vaccinated.
Francis joined the Cardinals and Archbishops from Brazil, El Salvador, Honduras, Mexico and Peru to participate in the campaign of the Advertising Committee and the COVID Collaborative and the Diocese of the Vatican’s Holistic Human Development.
